We're expecting abscess galore soon!

With the weather getting wet after such a long, dry summer it will be a big change for horses feet!

What can you do to try and prevent hoof abscesses?

🐴 Have hooves trimmed regularly
🐴 Hoof pick daily
🐴 Keep living areas clean by mucking out/poo picking
🐴 Remove any hazards such as sharp stones
🐴 Hoof supplements containing biotin may be helpful if your house struggles with hoof quality

It is now the right time of year to tapeworm test your horses!

Faecal worm egg counts don't pick up on tapeworms (until the burden is very severe!) So we need to test for these separately.

The tapeworm test is a saliva test which we have in stock, these come as a whole kit with instructions and envelope ready to send off.

We use the results from multiple worm egg counts and the tapeworm tests to decide which (if any) wormer your horse currently needs 😊

Worming info post 1: 20% of horses carry 80% of small redworm burden.
This means that usually 4 out of 5 horses don't need regular worming!

This is one of the reasons we are pushing for worm egg counts rather than blanket worming, more to follow 😜

Why are sedated dentals necessary? And can you spot the problem in this picture? 🧐

Dentals are more than just rasping off the sharp enamel points their teeth have grown. We are also looking for any abnormalities and issues with their teeth - which can be tiny! This means we need the whole horse (including their tongue) to be still enough for us to look over all of their teeth with a mirror.

What do we mean by 'yard days'?

🐴 The area we cover is split into 4 sections
🐴 Every other Thursday we will be in 2 of the areas (1 vet in each area)
🐴 The journey fee is free on these days
🐴 We can only book routine appointments on these days (vaccines, dentals, repeat blood samples)

Really sadly one of our miniature donkey patients has lost her husband today 😔 and donkeys really don't cope well by themselves!

If anyone has a donkey that may suit as a new companion for little Gertrude please let us or Bourton Vale Equine Clinic where she is staying know ❤️

Lots of correct guesses for what's been causing colic like symptoms.. crab flies/deer keds and maggots (in sheaths 🤢)

Poor ponies have been plagued by bugs this summer! 🪰
