🎆 FIREWORKS NIGHT IS APPROACHING 🎆

If your dog or puppy is worried by fireworks, don’t wait until the first bang to start helping them. 🐶❤️

One of the best things you can do is gradual desensitisation using fireworks sounds.

🔊 The golden rule: stay BELOW their threshold.

The aim is for your dog to hear the fireworks without reacting at all. Start with the sound so quiet that they barely notice it, and gradually increase the volume over multiple sessions.

If your dog starts looking worried, barking, trying to escape, panting or showing any other stress signals, the volume is way too high — drop it back down. We want to avoid repeatedly exposing them to a level that scares them.

🐾 Keep sessions short
🐾 Keep the volume very low to begin with
🐾 Pair the sounds with something positive — treats, food, play or a favourite chew
🐾 Gradually build up over days and weeks
🐾 Never force them to listen to a volume they’re uncomfortable with

The goal is not to get them used to loud fireworks by simply playing them loudly. It’s to gradually change their emotional response so that fireworks become just another background sound.

And remember — every dog is different. Some may progress quickly, while others need much more time. Slow is fast when it comes to desensitisation. ❤️

If you have a puppy, starting now is a fantastic preventative step before fireworks season gets into full swing.

From fear to growing confidence — celebrating Addie 🐾💙

We’re incredibly proud to share the wonderful work of our dog trainer and behaviourist, Sarah Wattie, and one very brave young lady, Addie. 💛

Over the past few months, Sarah has had the pleasure of supporting Addie through the Kids Around Dogs (KAD) programme.

After a frightening experience with a large off-lead dog when she was younger, Addie found being around dogs incredibly difficult. Even visiting her best friend, who has a dog, could feel daunting. But Addie wanted things to change, and her family reached out for support.

Together, Sarah and Addie followed the Kids Around Dogs protocol through seven virtual sessions and three in-person sessions, with a little help from a wonderful helper dog, Angus. 🐶

They explored dogs’ body language, how dogs communicate, what their behaviour can tell us and, importantly, what Addie could do if a dog approached her.

And week by week, her confidence began to grow. 💙

Addie didn’t just complete the challenges Sarah set her — she often surprised everyone by taking the next step herself. One week, she proudly announced that she had stroked her friend’s dog! 🥹

By their final session, the transformation was wonderful to see. Addie was walking Angus, asking him to sit, lie down and give a paw, and even offering him treats from her hand — slobber and all! 🐾

Sarah says:

“Watching Addie’s confidence grow has been such a joy. She has worked incredibly hard and shown so much determination. Her wonderfully supportive family and I are so proud of everything she has achieved.”

A huge thank you also goes to Angus and his lovely caregivers, who went above and beyond by bringing him to meet Addie and her family. Your kindness helped make these very special moments possible. 💛

Sarah loves staying in touch with her KAD families after their sessions have finished, celebrating their continued progress and being there to offer support if any obstacles arise along the way.

✨ 20 years of Pet-Professionals ✨

This weekend we came together for our annual AGM, and this year it was an extra special one as we celebrated 20 incredible years of Pet-Professionals. 💙🐾

Twenty years ago Pet-Professionals started with one simple goal: to provide kind, professional and knowledgeable pet care that owners could completely trust.

Since 2006 we’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of dogs, cats, small furries, reptiles, birds and their families across Sussex, and we couldn’t be prouder of the business we’ve built together.

As part of celebrating this milestone, we also unveiled our BRAND NEW LOOK. ✨

Our new branding isn’t about changing who we are — it’s about reflecting who we’ve become. It celebrates nearly two decades of experience while looking ahead to the future of Pet-Professionals. Over the coming months you’ll start seeing our new navy and ch*****ne gold branding across our website, social media, uniforms, vehicles and marketing.

The AGM was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on everything we’ve achieved, share our plans for the future and spend time together as a team. While not everyone was able to join us this weekend, every single member of the Pet-Professionals family is a huge part of our story and of the care we provide every day.

We’d also like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful local businesses and organisations who have supported Pet-Professionals over the last 20 years — our veterinary practices, rescue centres, pet shops and fellow pet care businesses. Your trust, recommendations and ongoing support have played such an important part in our journey, and we’re incredibly grateful to be part of such a caring local pet community. 💙

💙 A little act of kindness made a huge difference on Friday. 💙

A big shout out to our lovely team member Ruth, who is also one of our local Scan Angels.

On Friday evening, Ruth was called to a dog that had been found wandering. As a Scan Angel, she carries a microchip scanner and volunteers her time for free to scan lost pets in the community, helping identify them and reunite them with their families as quickly as possible.

After scanning the dog, Ruth took them safely to Grove Lodge Veterinary Hospital, where they were reunited with their very relieved family. 🐾❤️

This is exactly why microchipping is so important. A registered microchip can turn what could be a frightening situation into a happy ending. It’s also a legal requirement.

Well done, Ruth – we’re so proud to have such a caring member of the Pet-Professionals team. 🫶

🐿️ Recall in real life 🐿️

This is Farley recalling away from a squirrel… mid chase.

That split second is exactly why recall training matters. When adrenaline kicks in and your dog is focused on something exciting, that’s when you find out how reliable their recall really is.

It’s the result of lots of consistent training, building value in coming back, and practising around increasing distractions.

A good recall isn’t just about convenience. It’s about safety, freedom, and being able to enjoy off-lead walks with confidence.

If your dog has selective hearing when they spot wildlife, other dogs or anything more interesting than you, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of the most common things we help owners with.

Just another day at Pet-Professionals… clipping the claws of two beautiful Great Danes!

When your patient’s head is genuinely bigger than team member Ruth’s, personal space becomes a distant memory. 😂

Thankfully these two gentle giants were absolute stars for their pedicure and soaked up all the fuss (and a few treats, of course!).

We never get tired of meeting amazing dogs of every shape and size… although some definitely come in extra large! 💙🐶
