🐕Pet owners are being urged to keep their dogs secure indoors at around 7pm on Wednesday evening.

🗣Animal welfare experts and organisations warn the solar eclipse could cause sudden distress for our furry friends, especially if the proper precautions are not undertaken.

🌙As per guidance issued by the RSPCA, families across England and the rest of the United Kingdom are preparing for the atmospheric phenomenon.

Specialists at the American Kennel Club explained that while dogs are not directly affected by the eclipse itself, it is the dramatic upturn in excitement and disrupted routines that may spark anxiety.

Veterinary officers at Dogs Trust note that canine companies rely heavily on subtle human cues and daily light cycles to feel secure in their surroundings. According to PDSA, sudden twilight during daylight hours can disorientate dogs, causing them to react as though a severe thunderstorm is on its way.

Commenting on the psychological impact, American Kennel Club chief veterinary officer Dr Jerry Klein said: "It's the human behaviour around the event - the crowds, parties, and sudden commotion - that causes stress for pets rather than the sky itself."

Meanwhile, resident veterinarian Dr Linda Simon from Pooch & Mutt added that confused dogs may display pacing, garden patrolling, or clingy behaviour as natural daylight fades.

Vets Now recommends that households close drawn curtains and switch on familiar radio music to buffer outdoor noise during the eclipse. Furthermore, the RSPCA reminds owners that keeping dogs inside prevents frightened pets from bolting out of garden gates or reacting to gathering crowds.

Representatives from The Kennel Club UK urged owners to complete their daily dog walks well before the celestial display gets underway. They stressed that maintaining a completely normal schedule remains the most effective strategy to keep four-legged family members calm and reassured.

Behavioural experts at Blue Cross suggested offering long-lasting puzzle treats indoors to keep pets happily engaged while the sun is obscured. Concluding their urgent advice, veterinary organisations reassure pet owners that normal canine behaviour will return as soon as full daylight is restored.
