🐾 Threshold Pauses ~ Helping Your Dog Choose Calmness Over Chaos 🐾
When a dog becomes overwhelmed, anxious, or starts showing those early signs of reactivity, one of the most powerful skills we can teach them is the ability to pause. Threshold management isn’t about stopping your dog from feeling things — it’s about giving them the space to process those feelings safely and calmly. Over time, this builds genuine mutual trust between dog and owner 💙🐾
A pause is beautifully simple. You stop, your dog stops, and together you take a moment. No commands, no corrections, no pressure — just stillness. This tiny moment allows your dog to self‑regulate, lower their arousal, and make a better choice. Instead of tipping into chaos, they learn that calmness is always an option 🐾
I often encourage owners to build a structured pause: start with 10 seconds, then 20 seconds, and if needed extend to 30 seconds. These short breaks can be used for anything that feels overwhelming — foot traffic, other dogs or animals passing, vehicles of any kind, busy environments, or simply moments where your dog needs time to think. It’s a gentle, effective way to help them stay below threshold and avoid reactive behaviour 💛🐾
Our brilliant client FINN demonstrates this perfectly. Following our session together, his owner kindly shared a video of their practice where Finn notices something concerning, pauses beautifully, and chooses calmness instead of reacting. It’s a wonderful example of how powerful this technique can be when practised consistently 🐾
