How hunger affects dogs participating in scent detection activities.

New research! ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Excited to see new research from Jade of Animal Behaviour Matters out this week! These two studies were undertaken with the Scent Detection Research Group at the The University of Waikato in New Zealand.

๐Ÿฆด Dogs were given breakfast before or after completing a scent-detection task.

โŒ When working prior to eating, dogs made significantly more false alarms.

๐Ÿบ Being hungry may cause a mild increase in frustration-related behaviour during scent work for some dogs.

๐Ÿ• Dogโ€™s hunger state can influence both scent-detection performance and behaviour.

Yee et al. (2026) found that dogs working before breakfast produced more false alarms, suggesting hunger may increase dogs' tendency to respond to non-target odours.

Fountain et al. (2026) found that unfed dogs showed more whining and interaction with the equipment, indicating mild frustration associated with hunger. However, frustration behaviours were generally infrequent and varied between individual dogs.

Links to both of these open access articles will be in the comments or search them on google scholar/research gate.

EDIT FULLY BOOKED
One space has become available on my Line Handling workshop this Thursday at the beautiful Shelsley Walsh.

Good line handling can make such a difference to a search. The aim is to create a seamless flow around the search area, allowing your dog to work as freely and naturally as they would off lead, without the line restricting or inadvertently influencing their search.

At the same time, good line handling gives us the ability to keep our dogs safe and connected in environments where working off lead simply isn't possible.

This workshop will look at the practical skills involved in achieving that โ€” how we move, where we position ourselves, how we manage the line and, importantly, how we learn to follow our dog rather than directing their search.

Please go to the website to book or the link is in the comments.
