Lets talk hip scores..
Please feel free to comment below on your thoughts. This post is purely a layman’s discussion on hip scoring, although any vets opinions would be amazing!
So generally, hip score means for Labradors are getting lower all the time. Although I appreciate they have risen from 8 to 9 recently.
Why is this???
Is this now due to the fact that we are breeding from dogs with lower hip scores, so the breeds hips are improving? Or, is it an unfair average with only the better scores being submitted for scoring.
Are we looking at an unrealistic breed mean? Are we at risk of more problems from hips now being too perfect? A zero hip score is now quite common isn’t it?
Or are we doing a good job and improving the breeds hips.
This post is most definitely not knocking hip scoring, I think everyone will agree that any tests carried out to avoid problems when breeding is definitely very important.
