Meet Polo, our longest stayer at our Watford Gap Kennels (Oct '25)
--please share--

Five year old, Polo doesn't fit the mould of "lazy greyhound". If you're thinking a greyhound might be too sedate for your lifestyle, think again. Meet Polo who combines the joyful exuberance of a spaniel and the laziness of a greyhound in between the zoomies.

Polo has had practice at being a pet after a few weeks in foster care and our volunteer, Katie took her Kingsbury Water Park for even more practice We're not sure who had a better time, Polo or Katie....

"Today I had the pleasure of taking the amazing Polo out to Kingsbury Water Park. With Watford Gaps van keys in hand and Polo who could smell my pocket full of sausages we were off on our adventure.

Polo needed help getting in the van, which wasn't a problem as she's a little dot compared to some of our other greyhounds. With a shimmy in and grateful head rub she settled down for the drive.

Polo jumped straight out of the van, took in her surroundings and began sniffing at every blade of grass she could find. She trotted off down the paths eyeing up two spaniels as we walked past happily.

I tried to take her off the path to have a play in the long grass, but she quickly retreated for the path giving me that greyhound judgemental look as I giggled to myself from her reaction. She happily strolled past people on bicycles, and gave a runner the odd look of "why are you running?" (The unfit person I am, agreed with her ).

The walk was pleasant and if she did pull, as soon as she felt the tug of the lead she stopped and slowed her pace. As the walk went on she went past a few other breeds of dogs with not much drama always rewarded with a sausage.

We saw a larger dog barking at its owner wanting to play fetch in the water, this did get Polo excited and she began to jump, at this point she had been walking for 40 minutes so it was probably all getting a bit too much for her.

We turned to find our own "beachy" area for her to look at, but I was not expecting her to jump straight in. Yes Polo is a water greyhound, she loves to go for a paddle.

We decided to head back to the cafe for a nice sausage roll. The staff were amazing and came from behind the counter to give Polo a fuss, something Polo is never going to refuse.

As Watford Gaps longest stayer I am absolutely baffled no-one has picked her. She has this beautiful white fleck throughout her fur which makes her very unique.

With sausage rolls in hand we headed back to the van for a debrief with one another on how the walk went. Polo wasn't much of a speaker, but with a mouth full of sausage roll and left over sausage treats, she wasn't going to say much.

We walked around the paddock when we got back to kennels for our last toilet trip and headed back to her kennel for a nice relaxed belly rub in her nice clean bedding."

Polo would love to see you if you promise to tickle her belly. Please get in touch and lets find this vivacious girl the home she deserves.

A VERY SPECIAL BOY

Home Run Hounds prides itself in doing all it can for Greyhounds in its care and Kai below is no exception. When his owner passed away suddenly in February and the family would not pay for a dental that was desperately needed, they asked he be put to sleep. We asked that he be transferred into HRH if that was what they required and then ignored the instruction as he was now ours to care for.

With the help of an amazing supporter who does so much for our charity – David Lankshear who heard of Kai's plight, donated £2000.00 to HRH to look after Kai’s vet’s bills so we did not dip into charity monies for the ex-racing greyhounds in our care and we can, today, celebrate his 12th Birthday.

Kai is now being looked after in a loving home until Rainbow Bridge beckons ... when he is ready.

Please take time to wish him a Happy Birthday .....

Introducing Dora

Adorable Dora (Bora Bora) is a beautiful black babe. At 4 years old, it's time to hang up her running boots and swap them for sofa & slippers.

Dora is an absolute sweetheart - loves human interaction and cuddles, walks beautifully on her lead and stands nicely for daily teeth cleaning & grooming.

As she is new in, we are yet to get her offsite to discover the big wide world, but we will report back on her progress soon.

In the meantime, if you would like to meet Darling Dora, please get in touch🐾

Our thoughts are with friend and supporter of the kennels Jo, who sadly lost her Father recently. Tribute donations in his memory were very kindly for Home Run Hounds, where £100 was raised. Thank you so much to Jo's family and friends for thinking of us at such a sad time

Waseley Walk 14th June 2026

It was such a lovely day for a walk with the hounds, especially at Waseley. Soft and gentle sunlight (I’ve just invented that term), a zephyr breeze at the top, colour all around, buttercups, red and white clover, red sorrel and yellow rattle poking through the wild tall thin grasses, and white elder flowers on many of the hedgerow plants. See pic with all the wild stuff.

31 hounds participated in the walk with 3 others taking their own route.
The raffle took £77, merchandise £25, donations £55.

Thanks to everyone who made it to Waseley and could contribute, with their presence and/or their wallet. Thanks as usual to the team of Carol, Jenny, Len and Sue.

Cheers,
Arthur

It was lovely to see Claire from FM&J Wait Funeral Directors, who is planning to do another one of her bake sales to support HRH when she gets back to work after her maternity leave. Claire visited with our "youngest volunteer, " the very adorable Toby who is 4 months old and brought along some rabbits ears for the kennel hounds.

Kennel hound, Mary, was very good with Toby and no doubt she will enjoy her rabbits ear later too.
