🐹 Meet Rumple.

The face behind the business.
The brains behind the operation.
The reason absolutely nothing gets done quietly in my house. šŸ˜‚

Whilst SPEC Therapy is mostly horses and dogs, I couldn’t NOT introduce you to the smallest member of my animal family!

Rumple is my very spoilt hamster, professional snack thief, occasional escape artist and, most importantly, my favourite distraction when I’m supposed to be writing treatment reports. 🤣

Nothing quite like sitting down after a busy day thinking ā€œright, let’s get these reports doneā€ā€¦ only for Rumple to decide that NOW is the perfect time to demand attention, investigate what I’m doing and generally make sure I get absolutely nothing done. šŸ˜‚

He has absolutely no qualifications in McTimoney Animal Manipulation, but he does have an impressive ability to cause chaos at 10pm when I’m trying to get an early night.

He’s not available for bookings, although I’m sure he’d happily accept payment in sunflower seeds. šŸŒ»šŸ˜‚

I thought it was only fair that he made an appearance on the page too… after all, he has to put up with me talking about horses and dogs all day!

šŸ‘‹ A little bit about the person behind SPEC Therapy…

If you’ve been following my page for a while, you’ll probably have realised that I REALLY like animals. šŸ˜‚

SPEC Therapy started because I wanted to turn something I’m genuinely passionate about into a career where I can help horses and dogs feel and move their best.

I work with both competition and leisure animals, and I love seeing the difference that appropriate care can make — whether that’s helping a competition horse through their busy season, supporting a horse through rehabilitation, or simply giving an older dog a little extra TLC.

I’m also a massive believer in working as part of a team.

Vets, farriers, physios, trainers, saddlers, owners and other professionals can all have important roles to play, and I’m always happy to work alongside them when appropriate.

I’m still learning, still developing and still ridiculously excited every time someone trusts me with their animal. 🄹

So whether you’ve been following SPEC Therapy since the beginning or you’ve only just found me…

thank you for being here! šŸ’—

ā€œWhat actually happens when you treat a horse?ā€

It’s not just a case of walking up, clicking a few bits and sending them on their way! šŸ˜‚

Before any treatment, I carry out an assessment and take the time to understand the horse’s history, lifestyle, workload and any concerns their owner has noticed.

I’ll then assess how they’re standing and moving, palpate through the body and look at how they’re responding.

Treatment is tailored to the individual horse and uses gentle, controlled techniques.

And afterwards, I’ll discuss what I’ve found and provide appropriate aftercare.

Every horse is different.

Some are incredibly expressive about what they think of the whole process šŸ˜‚

Others basically fall asleep.

And some stand there wondering why you’re fussing around them.

But watching a horse relax into treatment and seeing them move more comfortably afterwards will NEVER get old. 🄰

šŸ•šŸ’Ø PREHAB ISN’T JUST FOR COMPETITION HORSES!

If you’ve got a sporty dog, you’ll know just how much they ask of their bodies.

Agility dogs jumping and turning.

Flyball dogs sprinting and stopping.

Gundogs running, swimming and retrieving.

Even the family dog launching themselves across the garden after a ball like they’re competing at Crufts šŸ˜‚

All of that movement puts different demands on the musculoskeletal system.

That’s where taking a proactive approach to their physical wellbeing can be useful.

Regular observation, appropriate exercise, good conditioning and working with the right professionals can all form part of keeping our dogs happy and active.

Because we’d rather support them while they’re doing well than wait until they’re forced to stop. šŸ’—

🐓 ā€œBut he doesn’t look sore!ā€

One of the trickiest things about horses is that they don’t always make it obvious when something isn’t quite right.

Sometimes the first thing an owner notices is a change in performance.

Maybe they’re suddenly reluctant to work one way.

Maybe they feel different in the contact.

Perhaps they’re taking longer to warm up, becoming grumpy when tacking up, or just don’t feel quite like themselves.

And sometimes… there’s absolutely nothing obvious at all!

That’s why an assessment is about more than looking for an obvious problem.

It’s about considering the whole horse and picking up on changes in how they’re moving, standing and responding.

Of course, musculoskeletal treatment isn’t a replacement for veterinary investigation when there’s pain, lameness or an unexplained change in behaviour or performance.

But working as part of your horse’s wider care team can help us keep a closer eye on those little changes. šŸ’—

So… why choose SPEC Therapy? šŸ‘‹šŸ“šŸ¶

There are lots of people offering different types of treatment, so choosing someone for your horse or dog can feel a little overwhelming!

For me, it’s not about being the person who can ā€œfixā€ everything.

It’s about taking the time to assess the individual in front of me, listening to their owner, working within my scope of practice and knowing when another professional needs to be involved.

I’m qualified in Animal Therapy and McTimoney Animal Manipulation, with additional equine management training — and I’m constantly continuing my education because there is ALWAYS more to learn.

I also want you to understand what I’m doing and why.

You’ll receive a written post-treatment report with my findings, areas treated and aftercare recommendations, and you’re always welcome to get in touch if you have questions afterwards.

Most importantly?

Your animal’s welfare comes first. Always. šŸ’—

🐓 REHAB IS A TEAM SPORT!

When a horse is recovering from an injury, there can be so much more involved than simply getting them treated.

Veterinary care, rehabilitation exercises, appropriate exercise, farriery, nutrition, saddle fit and musculoskeletal support can all have their own roles to play depending on the individual horse.

My role isn’t to replace any of those things.

It’s to work alongside them.

That’s why veterinary consent is so important when there is an existing injury or veterinary diagnosis. I want to know what’s going on and make sure any treatment I provide is appropriate for that particular horse.

The goal isn’t simply to get a horse moving again.

It’s helping them return to doing what they love as safely and appropriately as possible. šŸ’—

Assess, treat, reassess — every horse gets an individual approach based on what I find on the day. šŸ’—

Please also enjoy my ridiculous concentration face šŸ˜‚ I promise I’m not angry, my brain is just working overtime!

Huge thank you to this lovely owner for filming some clips for me to share 🄰

🐶 We often think about musculoskeletal care for horses…

…but our dogs use their bodies EVERY day too!

Running around the garden, jumping on and off furniture, chasing balls, going for walks, competing in agility, working, swimming or simply getting older can all place different demands on the body.

Musculoskeletal therapy may have a role in supporting comfort and movement as part of a wider care plan.

And just like with horses, it’s not about simply treating something because we can.

A good assessment comes first, and if something doesn’t look appropriate for treatment, that’s when veterinary input is important. 🩺

Every dog is different, and their treatment should be too. šŸ’—
