We are seeing a lot of respiratory cases at the moment, please see below:
EQUINE ASTHMA 💨
With Spring in full swing and Summer approaching, it's the time of year again when breathing issues start to rise. The most common breathing problem we diagnose at this time of year is Equine Asthma. Clinical signs may vary dependent on the severity of the disease but may include:
• Coughing (during exercise, at rest, or both)
• Nasal discharge
• Heavy / laboured breathing
• Wheezing
• Unusual fatigue / poor performance
• A 'heave line' along the abdomen
The cause of Equine Asthma is the body mounting a localised inflammatory response in the airways to environmental allergens such as grass and tree pollens - which are usually found in higher quantities in Spring/Summer time.
The allergic reaction leads to narrowing of the airways, mucus secretion, and airway hypersensitivity. Hot and humid weather will often exacerbate the problem.
A diagnosis is often made by the vet by performing a clinical exam by listening to the airways with a stethoscope. If however the diagnosis is uncertain or the response to initial treatment is sub-optimal, endoscopy of the airways would be the next step. This procedure is known as a "tracheal wash", which samples inflammatory material from the trachea. Sometimes a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is performed at the same time to sample further down within the lungs. Both are tolerated very well and may be performed either at your horse's yard or at our clinic.
Once diagnosed, treatment options vary but include:
• Bronchodilators to open the narrowed airways
• Steroids (either oral or inhaled) to reduce the severity of the inflammation in the airways
• Avoiding turnout during peak pollen times
• Minimising environmental dusts (soaking hay, providing dust free bedding)
If you are concerned about your horses breathing or have any questions regarding Equine Asthma, please contact the clinic.
