One of my favourite sounds….
2002 I was crewing for the Bahrain Endurance team, and it was the first time I had been at the beginning of an international race ride at sunrise.
A truly moving experience, hearing the sound of the horses hooves on the ground and feeling the vibrations through the ground as I stood by and watched
Absolutely magical and still brings a lump to my throat when I think about it now
Beautiful ❤️

Always a useful refresher
Remember if you think your dog has heatstroke
WET then VET…..

🐶 Sudden UK heat spike this weekend – protect your dogs! 🐶

🌡️ A BIG temperature jump is forecast in the coming days ☀️🐶
Many areas in Central and Southern UK are expected to jump from the cool 15–20°C we’ve had for much of May straight up to 30°C+. For dogs that haven’t had their summer clip yet, this sudden change brings real risks, especially as they’re not acclimatised. Older dogs, overweight dogs, and those with heart or respiratory conditions may be particularly vulnerable.

Dr David Marlin (https://askanimalweb.com/home) has been clear on this for years: a dog’s coat does NOT keep them cool in hot weather. Hair is insulation, it traps body heat and slows heat loss. The thicker or longer the coat, the harder it is for dogs to cool down.

⚠️ Higher-risk dogs include:
• Large breeds
• Thick or dark-coated dogs
• Overweight, unfit or older dogs
• Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds
• Dogs with heart or respiratory issues
• Very active dogs

💡 Practical management tips:
• 🌅 Walk early morning or late evening only
• 🔥 Avoid hot pavements/tarmac
• 🏠 Keep dogs cool indoors during peak heat
• 💧 Provide constant access to fresh water
• ✂️ Consider clipping long/thick coats
• 💦 Use water, paddling pools or cooling aids carefully
• 🚗 Never leave dogs in cars, Ever!
• 🌱 Be cautious of artificial grass, which can become much hotter than real grass

🚨 Signs of heatstroke (medical emergency):
• Heavy panting or restlessness
• Excessive drooling/thirst
• Red or purple gums/tongue
• Weakness, collapse or seizures

❗ If suspected: WET THEN VET!
Immediately cool the dog with cold water and seek veterinary help ASAP — rapid cooling saves lives.

I love this picture because it represents an owner who is devoted to her event horse. She’s not the professional rider with the glory, but she is the one who cries quietly with relief when the horse she adores, is back safely in his temporary stable at his first stay away event, resting after a storming cross country!! ❤️❤️

Music to my ears
Before breeding your mare, please think about the gene pools and also your ability to give a foal, yearling and young horse the most helpful and healthy socialisation and handling to set them up for being treated kindly.

“Just because you can breed a foal doesn’t mean you should.”

In a crowded market with increasing welfare concerns, breeding horses can no longer be an opportunity-led decision.

This new article by one of Animalweb's breeding experts, Veronica Fowler, challenges breeders to ask the hard questions:

🐴 Why this foal?
🐴 Why this mare and stallion?
🐴 What lifelong responsibility are you taking on?
🐴 Could your goal be achieved by buying rather than breeding?

A powerful reminder that responsible breeding starts with intention, not convenience.
