When should you start grooming your puppy? Earlier than most people think 🐶

We recommend starting at around 10 weeks old — roughly 2 weeks after their first jabs, giving them a bit of a safety buffer before being around other dogs in the salon.

Why so early? Puppyhood is the best window for building positive associations with grooming. Nail clips, brushing, bath time, the sound of dryers — the earlier a puppy experiences all of this in a calm, positive way, the less likely they are to become anxious or difficult about grooming as an adult dog. Waiting until they’re older and already unsure about it makes everything harder, for them and for us.

Early sessions are kept short and gentle — this isn’t a full groom on day one. Think handling paws and ears, a light brush, maybe a first light trim. Little and often, building confidence each visit.

If you’ve got a puppy at home, it’s worth getting them in sooner rather than later. 🐾

This English Sheepdog’s coat had matted into one solid mass, so it had to come off as a single piece — you can see the size of it laid out in the video. Matting like this can happen fast, especially with a coat this thick and dense, and it doesn’t always look that bad on the surface until you get underneath it.

Why we shave rather than brush it out: at this stage, brushing would be far more uncomfortable for the dog than a full shave. Severe mats pull on the skin, trap heat and moisture underneath, and can hide sores or skin issues that we only find once it’s off. A clean shave is genuinely the kindest option here.

The best bit is what happens after — dogs are almost always visibly more comfortable the second it’s off. Hair grows back, and from here it’s just about keeping on top of it with regular grooming.

The secret weapon behind every wash 🧴✨

Chesca uses shampoo on every dog that comes through the door, and there’s a real reason why — not just habit.

Dog skin isn’t the same as human skin. It has a different pH balance, and using the wrong shampoo — human shampoo, or a cheap generic one — can strip natural oils, dry the skin out, and actually make itching, flaking and a dull coat worse rather than better. A proper dog-specific, pH-balanced shampoo like Wahl works with the skin instead of against it, cleaning thoroughly without disturbing that natural barrier.

The difference shows afterwards: softer, shinier coats, less prone to matting, and a lot more comfortable for dogs with sensitive skin. It’s a small thing that gets overlooked constantly, but the shampoo you use matters just as much as the technique behind the wash.
