Next time you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or defeated as a dog walker, remember this:

Dog walking is only hard for the fully engaged, deeply invested, genuinely caring walkers.

The ones who notice everything.
The ones who care about every dog.
The ones who give it their all, every single day.

If it feels hard sometimes, it’s probably because you care so much. 🐾

"E-collars allow freedom..."

There's a boarding kennels near me who recently posted a picture of their two dogs wearing shock collars. I asked of they were e-collars or GPS. The reply was that they were e-collars. I further commented that I would not be using there services and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. The response-

"our dogs have freedom wearing e-collars"

There are two immediate points to this comment

1. You dog is off lead, sure, but they don't have "freedom" from being shocked or the threat of being shocked
2. A shock collar os not the only way to allow "freedom" for yoir dog - most dogs are more than capable of being "free" without being shocked - it's just that you can't be bothered doing it so you take them easy way out which the dog pays the price for. Again.

I'm not suggesting that they put shock collars on their clients' dogs but it's an excellent indicator of their view of how dogs should be treated.

I won't name the kennels, but whichever dog training services you use, please ask about what their philosophy is towards training and care.

I see dog walkers posts on socials where every dog is wearing a slip lead.

Trainers' pages where you can see the tell tale sign of the shock collar remote in the client's hand or on a lanyard.

Groomers who refer to dogs in their care in really disrespectful ways to the dog's being.

Our choices matter. So many people are uneducated and often desperate. Ask questions. Don't give your hard earned cash and the care of your dog to someone whose views don't align with your own.

As usual, I'm not interested in debating this or allowing comments which promote, endorse, justify, or excuse the use of these tools.

This is what happens when you consistently engage your dog, play with them, have fun and reward them for the good stuff.

Finn could have chosen to be anywhere but he chose to be with me, I didn’t ask him to, no treats etc. he just hung out there 💙 and this isn’t a fluke, he does it every walk, multiple times.

Still working on more appropriate greetings and disengaging from other dogs but every walk gets better and better. Today a dog came trotting along the path, we stepped to the side and he stayed engaged with ZERO pulling towards to try to say hello. Lots of reinforcement and IT WORKS! It’s not quick.. we’ve been working together since September last year but being able to meet his needs with a walk and combine with training has been amazing for both him and his owners.

I love this massive teddy bear.

People always say ‘my dream job to be a walker/trainer’… do they realise that my life and legs are at risk everyday?! My life is on the line… (watch until the end)

Still can’t get over Finn and Loki having a lovely walk together earlier in the week.. they both smashed it! Neither would ‘choose’ eachother to walk with, but the self regulation and management from both of them was incredible 👏🏼 the best boys!!!

Probably one of the last combinations that I thought would work.. shows how far they’ve both come 🥰❤️
