Let’s talk senior dogs and their teeth!

By the time our beloved dogs reach their senior years, their teeth have often seen better days!

Years of plaque and tartar build-up can take their toll, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to start caring for their oral health.

Regular teeth cleaning can make a real difference!

As dogs get older, maintaining good oral hygiene becomes even more important. Some senior dogs may benefit from more frequent appointments to help manage plaque build-up and keep their mouths as healthy and comfortable as possible.

Their teeth may never be pearly white again, and years of damage can't always be reversed, but with consistent care, we can help maintain their oral hygiene and support their comfort in their golden years. 🐾

💕 This lovely little lady visits me once a month, and just look at the difference!

It's a wonderful example of what regular maintenance can achieve.

Because age shouldn't mean giving up on their dental care. Our golden oldies deserve healthy, happy mouths too!

Remember, grooming appointments help with routine oral hygiene, but they don't replace veterinary dental examinations or treatment for dental disease.

🐾 How often should your dog be groomed? 🐾

It’s a question I get asked a lot!

As a general rule of thumb, dogs kept in a longer style, such as a fluffy teddy bear cut, should be groomed every 4–6 weeks, whereas dogs kept in a shorter trim can usually go 6–8 weeks between appointments.

But grooming isn't just about keeping your dog looking beautiful — it's about their comfort, wellbeing and building a positive relationship with the grooming process.

Dogs who struggle with grooming, have a nervous disposition or have specific grooming needs can often benefit from more frequent appointments, rather than fewer.

🐾 Here's something that might surprise you...

When a dog finds grooming difficult, it's tempting to leave longer gaps between appointments to avoid putting them through something they dislike.

Unfortunately, this can often have the opposite effect!

Longer gaps can mean more coat growth, more tangles and potentially painful matting. This can make the next grooming appointment longer, more uncomfortable and more stressful for your dog.

Sometimes the answer to a dog who dislikes grooming is MORE frequent grooming, not less.

Regular appointments help establish a familiar routine, keep coats manageable and give nervous dogs more opportunities to build confidence and trust.

Every dog is different, which is why I always try to recommend a grooming schedule that suits each individual dog. Sometimes that schedule needs adjusting as their coat, behaviour or needs change.

Ultimately, my priority will always be your dog's comfort and welfare, not just how lovely they look when they leave.

Working together with your groomer to find the right routine really can make all the difference.

A happy, comfortable dog is always the goal! 🐶 🐾💕

• TUESDAY •

Another full day with six dogs groomed.

🐾 Oatie - A good trim, card out that spay coat and leave the ears to air dry to retain those curls!

🐾 Tippy & Rae Rae - Such a sweet pair, Rae Rae is Tippy’s protector when it comes to anything scary. I wouldn’t have it any other way than both of them up on the table together!

🐾 Dusty - Oh Dusty, we’ve been doing this a long time together. I’m finally allowed to touch her feet and her tail. Only gently mind!

🐾 Cookie - In for a bath before a little holiday! She looks so cute!

🐾 Charlie - In for his usual groom. Always such a happy chap once it’s over!
