He managed to steal some chocolate and had to come to see us to be made sick 🙈
🍫 Chocolate Toxicity in Dogs! 🍫
Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine (similar to caffeine), which dogs bodies cannot break down. This then results in signs of toxicity, such as:
🍫 Vomiting (which can be bloody)
🍫 Diarrhoea
🍫 Hyperactivity
🍫 Rapid heart rate
🍫 Rapid breathing
🍫 Seizures
The severity of symptoms depends on how much chocolate the dog has eaten, the size of the dog and the amount of theobromine in the chocolate - cocoa powder and dark chocolate having higher levels than white or milk chocolate.
Depending on the toxicity risk, treatment could range from monitoring at home, making your dog sick, to hospitalisation for fluids and further treatment.
