Today we celebrate Elaine, who has reached her 20 year anniversary at Anderson Moores! 🍾🌟

Elaine joined Anderson Moores (then Anderson Sturgess) back in 2006. She joined as head surgical nurse, alongside Rachel as head medicine nurse. Together they began to build the nursing team that has grown to the team we have today. 🧡

Elaine gained her diploma in advanced surgical nursing and still has a strong interest in all things theatre related. Her role has changed over the years and she is now supporting the Out Of Hours team as their team leader and most recently begun to assist within our dentistry team. 🦷

Since 2006 she has seen many changes - the buildings have increased significantly, from what started as one, is now spread over five. Staff numbers have grown from just 2 Registered Veterinary Nurses and 3 clinicians to a huge team, all affectionately known as the AMVS family.

Outside of work, Elaine is mum to her three children and her black Labrador Ivan, she enjoys long forest walks and family camping trips. 🐶

🎉 Where It All Began 🎉

As we celebrate 20 years of Anderson Moores, we’re taking a look back at just how much we’ve changed and grown over the years.

In 2006, Anderson Sturgess was founded by Davina Anderson and Kit Sturgess with a vision to provide specialist veterinary care across three key disciplines: soft tissue surgery, orthopaedics and medicine. Starting out as a small team of just five people — 3 clinicians and 2 nurses.

But it didn’t take long for the practice to become incredibly busy! In those early days, Rachel, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses, worked an amazing 144 hours of overtime in her very first month as demand for the new specialist services grew! 😲 It’s a brilliant reflection of just how popular the practice was from the very beginning — and of the incredible dedication of the small team behind it.

In 2009, Andy Moores joined the team, marking an important chapter in our story and leading to the name change from Anderson Sturgess to Anderson Moores.

Fast forward two decades, our services, facilities and teams have continued to develop, reflecting the ever-changing world of veterinary medicine. With now over 160 staff members, 10 specialist disciplines, 5 buildings, 4 wards and 3 surgical theatres!

Blood stocks are currently very low, and Pet Blood Bank UK are always looking for new donors.

'Woody has been a blood donor for Pet Blood Bank UK for just over a year and has now given 8 donations, saving up to 32 other dogs' lives!
He enjoys attending the sessions and getting all the fuss and treats. It's such a positive experience; there is never any pressure on Woody, and he's even fallen asleep during the donation.
The whole visit takes about an hour, but the donation itself lasts around 5 minutes.'

Meet Morris the 4 year old British Shorthair cross who presented to our Internal medicine team with a 1-month worsening history of intermittent vomiting. 😻

Morris was sedated for an abdominal ultrasound which revealed lymphadenomegaly (enlarged lymph nodes), delayed gastric emptying and mild distension of the small intestine. This initially raises concerns for cancer, therefore fine needle aspirates were taken of the colic and jejunal lymph nodes (situated in the abdomen).

Cytology was compatible with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia which is a benign overgrowth of normal lymphoid cells and acts as an immune response to persistent infections, inflammation, or immune system disorders.

After ruling out any other underlying issues or infectious processes causing the vomiting, Morris was diagnosed with suspected Chronic Inflammatory Enteropathy (CIE) - also known as IBD in human medicine.

CIE is broadly divided into two types, a food-responsive or a steroid/immunosuppressive-responsive disease. In Morris's case a food-responsive type was suspected and after trialling a strict change to a hypoallergenic diet, Morris has not vomited since!

A hypoallergenic diet is specifically formulated to manage adverse food reactions by preventing an immune reaction. Therefore these diets work by eliminating common allergen triggers such as chicken, beef and dairy.

Navigating CIE can be challenging, as diagnosis often requires ruling out other causes and finding the right treatment can take time. With careful decision-making, patience and an individualised approach, many patients can achieve good long-term control and quality of life.

Common signs of CIE to look out for include: weight loss, vomiting, diarrhoea, changes in appetite and lethargy.

🐱 Meet Moomin, a 13-year-old domestic shorthair who was referred to Anderson Moores for investigation of an adrenal tumour.

The tumour was discovered after Moomin developed an increase in thirst. Further investigations showed that the tumour was secreting both cortisol and aldosterone, hormones which can affect the body in several ways, including blood pressure and thirst regulation.

Moomin underwent advanced imaging to check whether the tumour had spread to any other organs. Thankfully, there was no evidence of spread, meaning that surgical removal was considered the best treatment option and offered a good prognosis. 🧡

Surgery involved removing the affected adrenal gland along with the tumour. As cats have two adrenal glands, removing one is not expected to cause long-term health problems. However, close monitoring during recovery is essential to make sure the remaining adrenal gland is functioning normally.

Thankfully, Moomin's surgery went very well and he was able to go home just two days later. 🐈

He will continue to be monitored by our Oncology service over the coming years with regular ultrasound scans and blood tests. This will allow us to detect any recurrence of the tumour as early as possible.

We're delighted with how well Moomin has done and wish him all the best for his continued recovery! 🧡

Our neurology team recently saw Forest, a lovely 3year old Labrador with a history of apparent discomfort, reluctance to jump and exercise.

Following MRI, Forest was diagnosed with an abnormal bone in his lower back called a transitional vertebra. A transitional vertebra is where a spinal bone takes on the traits of the section next to it. This was likely contributing to early degeneration of the supporting tissues in this area and secondary nerve compression.

He unfortunately did not improve with medical treatment or a course of 3 epidural steroid injections, being unable to return to exercise without being painful. He therefore returned to see our neurologist Edward Ives and neurology resident Sophie Stables for further imaging for surgical planning and surgery.

Forest underwent a lumbosacral spinal stabilisation surgery whereby 3D-printed patient specific drill guides were used to make placement of his implants as safe as possible, maximising the strength of the construct. The affected bones were stabilised using titanium pedicle screws and rods as seen in the video, before bone graft was collected from his hip bones to pack around these implants with the aim of promoting fusion and the best long-term outcome for this young dog. 🦴🤍

The video shows Forest looking very happy the day after surgery and he has continued to bounce back, doing well at his recent 4 week check! 🐕
