‘Dog breath’ is something that’s often joked about however it’s something that should be taken very seriously. It’s a strong warning sign that something’s going on that should be investigated ⚠️
There are all sorts of reasons your dog’s breath may smell, from dental disease to diabetes, there may be something visible such as a foreign body or the smell could indicate a problem with the liver or kidneys 🤔
Bacteria from the mouth passes straight to the gut so having a healthy oral environment is essential for your dog’s overall health. This can be achieved by feeding a fresh, whole food diet which promotes a healthy oral biome compared to feeding ultra processed foods, which can leave a sticky coating on the teeth 🦷
If your dog will tolerate it, regular manual brushing is considered the gold standard of oral care, just be aware of the type of toothpaste you use as many of the ‘pet friendly’ ones have some not so gut friendly ingredients in them 🪥
Raw meaty bones are a great way of cleaning teeth, they’re also nutritious and provide mental and physical benefits 🍖
If your dog’s breath is a bit stinky, please get them checked out. Don’t ignore it or let it become your dog’s ‘normal’ because it could be signalling a much deeper problem ‼️
