Geko’s back on top!

Pinkham Equine Client Odette didn’t have the 2025 eventing season she was hoping for. After finding her horse Geko in the field with a swollen leg, she quickly called us out to take a look.

Radiographs of the hock were taken and showed an avulsion fracture of the lateral malleolus of the tibia. This is positioned on the outside of the horse’s hock. Geko was referred into Donnington Grove Equine Vets where he underwent surgery.

Geko recovered well and was sent home to continue his rehabilitation. Ten days later Odette noticed a unilateral nasal discharge and a swelling over his left eye. Geko remained stable with no change to his demeanour, however over time the nasal discharge and swelling worsened. Pinkham Equine vet Emma visited to perform a thorough dental examination and radiographs of Geko’s head. Radiographs showed multiple fluid lines consistent with maxillary sinusitis.

The decision was made for Geko to return to Donnington to undergo a sinus flush, and to have a drain surgically placed. This remained in place for a week with daily flushing. Once Emma was satisfied that Geko’s sinusitis had resolved, the drain was removed and the hole closed.

Geko was finally allowed to get back to doing what he loves and to start his rehab. Odette spent the winter building Geko’s fitness back up with lots of hacking and hill works, so she could get him back out eventing in 2026!

We are pleased to say that the hard work put in from both Pinkham Equine and Donnington vets, and Odette’s dedication to getting her boy back out was all worth it!

Most recently Odette and Geko had a great run at Cirencester Park in the Cotswold Cup 100 championship. With a fab dressage score of 25, they led the pack. A super double clear followed with an unfortunate splattering of time faults, however I think we can all agree that with the 2025 Geko had, to come away with 3rd place is very impressive! 🥉🐴

Success at the sales! 🐎

With the thoroughbred yearling sale season kicking off in August it’s a busy time of year for our stud clients.

Some of you may remember Goodmorningolive foaling her first foal by Whitsbury Manor Studs exciting young stallion Dragon Symbol, in 2025.

At the 2025 Tattersalls November Foal sale, Ben successfully sold the c**t to Newmarket based Finbar Kent. ‘Oliver’ as he’s been known, returned to the ring at the Goffs Premier Yearling sale this month, resulting in a very successful pinhook!

We are looking forward to continue to follow ‘Oliver’s’ journey as he enters training with Richard Hannon Jr.

Goodmorningolive is back in foal with a full sibling, of what looks like a very exciting combination!

With National Racehorse Week in full swing, we were excited to be invited by Marcus Tregoning Racing based in Whitsbury to give a talk.

Pinkham Equine vet Charlie was in attendance, where he gave an informative talk on respiratory scoping and the importance of this with racehorses in particular.

We were glad to play a part in what will be a fantastic week around all things racehorse!

Thank you to the team at Marcus Tregoning Racing for hosting a great day! 🐎

Horses and Heatwaves! 🐴☀️

With the temperature rising this week we have put together a few tips to help your horse! 🌡️

✅ Ensure they have access to clean and fresh water

✅ Electrolytes can be added to your horses feed or water (ensure they have plain water available at the same time)

✅ Sloppy feeds or wet hay can help increase fluid intake

✅ If possible provide natural or artificial shade

✅ If your horse has pink skin applying sunscreen can help reduce the risk of burning

✅ If your horse is stabled using a fan can be beneficial, especially if stabled in a barn with minimal ventilation

✅ Avoid exercising your horse in the heat of the day, aim for early morning or later into the evening when the temperature is at its lowest

✅ Use cool water to help lower your horses body temperature, repeatedly soak in cold water, and do not sweat scrape in between

✅ Monitor for signs of heat stress, excessive sweating, signs of distress similar to colic, high respiration rate, unwilling to eat, lethargy, unwillingness to move or ataxia

✅ Avoid travelling horses unless it is an emergency

Silver linings for Apoline 🍏

Apoline is a 16yr old Comtois cross, unexpectedly she lost her pregnancy last September. Post loss, she continued to have some vaginal discharge.

Pinkham stud vets Sally and Charlie examined Apoline and found a linear foreign body in her uterus that was adhered to her body wall. She was referred to Donnington Grove Equine Vets for a thorough investigation. The foreign body revealed itself to be a stick. Apoline underwent surgery to remove the foreign body and repair the lesion to the uterus. The surgery was deemed a success, Apoline returned home where she was carefully monitored by Sally.

Apoline was lined up for a natural cover by Oldlands Vivaldi, with huge success she took first time, almost too much success with Apoline being scanned in foal with twins! Sally performed a twin squeeze, as horses are unable to carry two viable pregnancies.

The Pinkham team can’t wait to meet Apoline’s foal next year! 🐴

Great to see supported rider Becky Carter and the wonderful Postman in the rosettes!

At Pinkham Equine we believe in supporting thoroughbreds throughout their varied careers on and off the track, so it’s lovely to see Postie gaining his retrained racehorse competitor plaque.

Following recent reports of an Equine influenza (‘flu’) outbreak in Wiltshire, we have had a number of clients contact us for advice regarding vaccination. It is a time of year when everyone is keen to get out and about, and the competition season is well under way. We want to support you to do this safely!

Although many competition organizing bodies and Pony Clubs only require annual vaccination in order to be eligible to compete, it is known that protection from flu is strongest during the first 3-6 months post vaccination and then starts to wane. Between 6 months and 12 months an immunity gap can occur where protection is sub optimal and horses are at increased risk of clinical signs of flu and are more likely to spread the virus. For this reason, at times of potential high challenge we recommend administering flu boosters every 6 months. When at competitions or other events, avoiding the sharing of equipment/water sources and direct contact with other horses is sensible to reduce the risk of transmission of flu and other respiratory diseases.

It is important to note that whilst the flu vaccination is very effective at reducing the severity of disease in vaccinated horses and reducing the amount of shedding (leading to less spread), it is not 100% protective, so thought should be given to more frequent vaccination of horses kept on competition yards, even if they themselves do not go out.

In order to support our clients and to help to make sure that their horses have adequate immunity at this time, we are offering a 10 % discount on flu vaccines in June 2026, for people who would like to do an interim or 6 monthly vaccine in addition to their annual vaccine.

SWRC Spring Show! 🌼🏆

Pinkham Equine had the pleasure of sponsoring the South Wilts Riding Club spring show a couple of weeks back Downlands Equestrian. Pinkham vet Rebekah and nurse Charlotte were on hand to present the reserve and supreme champion placing, in both the in-hand and ridden championship class. We would like to congratulate everyone that took part!
