If you trail in urban environments, you will know it can be challenging.

So, what's going on?

Scent in urban environments is shaped by airflow rather than simply following the route a person walked. Buildings create urban canyons, vortices, eddies and recirculation zones that transport, concentrate and redistribute scent.

How does scent behave in urban areas? Scent in urban areas is influenced by wind, buildings and local airflow patterns. Structures create eddies, vortices and sheltered zones that can trap, transport or concentrate scent. This means a trailing dog may encounter scent away from the route originally t...

A lovely evening in Town.

Team Raven were fresh from their latest assessment having passed with flying colours (congratulations!). So we treated them to their first moving target! This is always a tricky puzzle for our dogs and Raven was great to watch trying to work out what was happening to the scent around her. A couple of passes and she had it, narrowing down the actual source of the scent! Well done Team Raven 👏 👍 🙌

Team Tarka completed a perimeter for a multi-directional start. Hard surfaces, a strong gusty wind and overlaid scent provided plenty of challenges. Tarka worked hard to locate her split runners as one of the group had heavily contaminated the trail. On the right trail she ignored the decoy and went straight to her runner for a well-deserved reward. Great work Team Tarka 👏 👏 👏

Tilly was a little less focused than she has been and wanted to spend a bit more time on her 'doggy social media', but that didn't stop her working through some really complex overlaid scent to start her first trail. Some good decisions and her calm and methodical style paid dividends! She finished on a lovely pet trail with plenty of difficulties thrown in by the 'hidden' dog. Great work Team Tilly 👏 👍 👌

And it was lovely to welcome a new team too. Having completed a couple of trails with mantrailing global, they adapted brilliantly to the slightly different approach and finished their day with a couple of junctions and their first ever pet trail too. Great work from this team. 👏 👏 👏

The next session with availability is Town evening of 23rd June.
Come and join the fun... all experience levels are welcome. www.dogtrailing.co.uk

Great to be with the gang today, and thankfully a bit cooler for our brachys.

Nearly a year since she last trailed, there was no stopping Dora! She's clearly missed it and hasn't forgotten a thing! After a little tester she went on to find her runner behind sealed fire doors! Lovely and confident her next hide was enjoyed by all and a real puzzle for the teams with a combination of hard surfaces, strong breeze and building dynamics pushing scent into unexpected corners. Great work Team Dora 👏 👍 👌

Millie was sent through the multi-storey parking, up and down levels before exploring varying terrains. After navigating these, she had to locate her runner on a different level. Millie was also subject to a lovely puzzle for her pet trail which should definitely have worn her out! Great job Team Millie 👏 👍 🙌

Team Hettie confidently headed off after their multi-directional start before taking twists and turns to find another car park. Hettie wanted to head to her runner as quickly as possible but for the benefit of the team was happy to track the runner via the route they took in the lift! Hettie made some super decisions on her second trail, nicely differentiating slightly older scent and heading straight for her reward. She had a lovely, slow saunter back after! Well done Team Hettie 👏 👍 😀

Pree likes to start with a pet find and she worked like a trooper to solve her challenge. After making great decisions to get there, her biggest challenge faced her... what seemed like a simple hide was really complex given wind, building interference and the way our hidden dog became almost 'invisible' in certain scent dead spots. She kept at it though, first trying a couple of different approaches before then heading around to find her hidden pet from a different approach. After being a lost dog herself and then straight into her final trail, she was definitely ready for bed! Good job Team Pree 👏 👏 👏

Trailing is great for all dogs types, even short-nosed ones like we had today have an amazing sense of smell.

A gorgeous morning for in today.

We had plenty of people so it felt right to involve as many as possible, so multiple runners were the theme of the day!

Team Misty were first up, methodically tracking down their split runners. Misty has been so much happier since we changed her style... she doesn't like a harness but as she is so considered with her trailing style, a collar works for her (and her teammate)! No second glance for the decoy, she went straight up to her runner even with a few additional decoys nearby. Great work Team Misty 👏 👍 👌

With Charlie, we throw everything at him to slow him into thinking. Today's challenge was the instructor hand as the transferred scent article, the usual array of difficulties but this time we had enough people for three runners. The two decoys were quickly eliminated but with the actual runner hidden on a different level he just had to keep working to solve the problem. And he did just that! Nice job Team Charlie 👏 👌 🙌

Team Hurley were also treated to their first split runner. Hurley is starting to air-scent and that shows in his more erratic style today as the scent swirled around corners of buildings and indeed at this location, underneath buildings. Sensitive handling and trust allowed him to work though all the challenges and come around a different side of the building. No problem with his split runner, a really confident indication for his reward. Great trails Team Hurley 👏 👍 👏

It was a pleasure to welcome Team Whisky today. As a rescue, he had to overcome that little challenge of approaching strangers. This is no small feat for some dogs but with a little patience and confidence given by his teammate he was on it. It will be good to see his style progress... today he did a little ground-scenting as he sought out clues. A great start Team Whisky, we look forward to seeing you very soon (thanks for booking straight on your next session!). 😀

There's limited availability in late June, and July and August sessions are now live so check out www.dogtrailing.co.uk for more information.

What a dreamy, summer time we had in Town this afternoon 😍.

We did some hiding in plain sight (remember, dogs use their noses instead so this is hard for them).

Audrey was first up and after a lovely multi-directional start and trip across town, the challenges were only just getting started. Our window shopping runner had saturated a pedestrian precinct with scent. Our detail-oriented Audrey then had to work out exactly where the scent was coming from... but it was moving. Eureka and such an excited indication from Audrey. Great work Team Audrey 👏 👍 👌

Team Hettie were on fire today and not just from the sun. Hettie was just wonderfully confident and her teammate responded even if at first there was slight doubt. Whenever a decision was to be made, Hettie found a way. Through town and market hall, across roads and... to the pub, testing preconceived ideas, Hettie wasn't phased and led her teammate to her find. Nice one Team Hettie 👏 👌 🙌

It's lovely seeing Gino's confidence blossom and today was no exception. We were in town. That's a place full of people and whilst we avoided busy areas, real life happens here and that can be challenging for Gino. As we've seen before though, he was working and despite coming across more people on a single trail than he would on his quiet, regular walks, he took them all in his stride. Great choices, confidently made and no reactive barking. Spot on for both trails for Team Gino. Great work 👏 😀 👏

Next availability for a super nose workout for dogs is later in June. Find out more at www.dogtrailing.co.uk

Have you ever looked at your dog and wondered if they need a job?

There's a lot of science behind this often unmet need. We've lived with dogs for thousands of years in a working partnership that remains the case for relatively few of our domestic dogs.

Read more about why it's so important to them!

Our teams were all smiling on this lovely afternoon in , though our dogs were all snoozing at the end (well the super exuberant sprockers at least!).

Percy was here for his second session and proved he had his nose ready for his prize, getting to work and very much strutting his stuff today. A couple of junctions and off scent enhancements so all spot on and super confident. Well done team Percy 👏 👍 🙌

Also showing super confidence were Team Gino. It's been an absolute delight seeing Gino blossom and today we saw him check out strangers as possible targets and move on calmly and methodically to complete his lovely finds. Really efficiently done, but more importantly, the milestones he reached in confidence today were a joy to be a part of. Well done Team Gino 👏 👍 🙌

Gary has been recommending trailing to his brother Snoop for a while, so Snoop dog decided it was time to try. Following in his brother's footsteps the game made perfect sense to him and we couldn't have asked for a better start. Great work Team Snoop and we look forward to seeing you very soon for your follow up session. Well done Team Snoop 👏 👌 👏

Finally Team Gary completed a mock assessment as a warm up which they completed in half the available time. They followed this with a lovely pet trail to track down that pesky lost brother of his, Snoop. Some lovely work with a challenging scent start finished this team for the day. Well done Team Gary, spot on 👏 👍 🙌

Super trailing today!

Mantrailing is great for building confidence in our dogs. They learn independent thinking and decision-making and this tires them out. Two sprockers were snoozing in the car boot at the end of the session as proof!
