Weird vibes in the night at Town and with just two teams we had a great tour around town.

Team Mani did a couple of epic pet trails before finishing the evening with something a little lighter. Despite the strong breeze and hard surfaces, Mani got his nose down when it counted to find his hidden dog. Lots of twists, turns and added difficulties so plenty for Mani to think about. All handled beautifully and with great teamwork, well done Team Mani 👏 👍 🙌

Team Tilly have continued their journey using the precision trail method and are really starting to see progress with Tilly's behaviours. Importantly, she's really enjoyed the new game style so it's fun too! Tilly rarely had her nose up at all and when she did it was because the ground scent had run out, so she has become much easier to read. Super work by this team and lovely to see their journey starting to blossom. Well done Team Tilly 👏 🙌 👌

Our dogs can be very close to the runner at the end of a trail when but struggle to work through the scent pool that is around them, as scent floods the area.

'Moving targets' can be far more difficult than we think as we can see the runner so it is confusing that our dogs don't make the connection (even when we know they haven't seen the runner!).

This is because of the way scent moves from our runner and interacts with the environment. We are a 'scent fountain' and we create a scent plume that billows around us.

This was so perfectly visualised on a CPD scent workshop today (check out Trailing K9s for future workshops) and great fun to be able to see what happens using smoke to simulate scent.

A great day of theory and practical demonstrations that brought scent behaviours to life.

And a great reminder of what our dogs are working through when mantrailing.

No wonder they get so tired by the end of a session!

Sunny times in Bear Town this afternoon.

Team Raven chased twists and turns created by their 2 runners. Through the gardens and across open ground Raven had the final piece of her puzzle to solve... how to get into the 'mini maze'! She answered that by getting her nose down, then a cursory sniff of her decoy then straight round to her actual target. That's the way to do it! Great work Team Raven 👏 👍 👌

It was lovely to see Team Clover back for their second session. Clover made a very positive start on her first trail showing she'd remembered everything from last time so it was lovely to take her off scent enhancements for her second trail. She's very confident approaching her runner and certainly loves her reward for doing so! Well done Team Clover, great progress today 👏 👍 🙌

Audrey was... well, distracted for her first trail but on fire for her main trail. With a multi-directional start, twists, turns and a long trail ahead she ploughed straight on with a little glint in her eyes that said 'I was only teasing for my first trail!'. Perfect choices, easy to follow and full of confidence she took her teammate straight to her runner. Well done Team Audrey, spot on! 👏 👏 👏

The heatwave got in the way of Team Ella joining another session so it had been 6 months since their second session. Ella did her 3rd session as though her previous was just last week, with full enthusiasm and confidence. To follow, she completed her first pet trail laid by a devious Raven who added a good degree of complexity. Team Ella smashed it! Great work Team Ella 👏 🙌 👏

You may have noticed that a long walk doesn’t always tire your dog out. In fact, many dogs return from a brisk run still full of energy. This is because physical exercise only addresses part of a dog’s needs. The other part — perhaps the more significant part — is mental stimulation.

Absolutely brilliant afternoon in with lovely weather. Our new starter was really game so we set a challenge for the more experienced teams. Nearly 500m each with 4 difficulties, on tarmac surfaces, with a good wind and our runner not touching the ground at all as she was using a mobility scooter 😉

Could they all solve it?

Yes, and what was really interesting was watching each of their techniques, none right or wrong, but each dog tackled the challenge in their own way. Team Bonnie did a great trail and set the bar, taking a few detours due to the way wind pushes around the architecture that the other dogs also followed too. A well tracked route with only small deviations. Well done Team Bonnie 👏 👍 🙌

Team Nell chose a dog treat as their scent article. Snack over, and Nell was being extra methodical, checking all possibilities before making her very accurate decisions. The result was the same even though the route took in more paths (well, as a she's not going to tire quickly). Great job Team Nell 👏 👍 👌

Team Mani chose a scent article that would prove to have a twist. Not only did it have the actual runner's scent, but it had also been contaminated by another team member who had gone before. This had the potential to throw them but instead, Team Mani made great decisions, smoothing out the extra difficulties thrown in. Then it was time to take a different, more direct route to save even more time. Great trailing Team Mani 👏 👌 🙌

New starter Team Clover may have had a hard act to follow, but the gorgeous won everyone's hearts. She also has a great little nose and showed what promise she has confidently moving along her trails and importantly not at all shy about approaching her runner for her rewards (and a bit of fuss too)! Well done Team Clover, a great start and we look forward to seeing your progression soon 😀 👍 👏

After the morning rain it turned out to be a perfect afternoon in .

Merlin tackled a static scent article after helping lay a fiendish pet trail for Team Ralph. Merlin made some great decisions cutting bits of trail but it's fair to say his 'head' was on the lookout for the girls on his pet trail. Not that he wasn't working but he was definitely also on his social media at the same time! We changed his person to a seated runner which blew his mind a bit and just shows how important it is to change context for our working dogs and train different scenarios. Well done Team Merlin 👏 👍 🙌

Ralph the is training for his expert-level assessment so we threw everything at him: off-trail, vague area start, multiple difficulties, road crossings, mixed terrain and a simulated area of free running (all packed into a shorter trail 😆). Needless to say Ralph was ready for a nap and motivational trail after succeeding. Great work Team Ralph 👏 👌 🙌

It was a great pleasure to introduce Louie to trailing. Whilst having a good nose, sighthounds love things that move. That didn't stop Team Louie showing us what potential Louie has with his nose. Eager to go, and confident from the start the lovely young Louie did a great job working out the game. Great start Team Louie, well done 👏 ✔️ 👍

It was also lovely to welcome back rommie rescue Hagi. This team also had their successes. Although Hagi has favoured finding pets, bringing his other human companion gave him opportunity to find a person again. Hagi also hasn't been for a while so after getting his head back in the game he went on to make really positive, and importantly, independent decisions to locate his 'favourite' human. Well done Team Hagi 👏 👍 🙌

A lovely Sunday morning at and all teams were on fire.

Team Millie are progressing well with their Precision Trailing and we're seeing lots of great nose-down work from Millie. She still can't help but get giddy when she arrives to trail but her working norm is more focused on scent close to the ground. She also loves the new game variation! Lovely trails from Team Millie 👏 👍 😍

Hettie recognised the small piece of apple that was her scent article before it was pointed out so was ready to go! She made light work of her trails despite mischievous little Pree trying to make her pet trail harder! Lovely focus despite the presence of squirrels and rabbits to steer her away (nearly worked at the end of her pet trail before Pree shouted to get her back in the game 😆). Great trailing Team Hettie 👏 👍 👌

Pree was back from recently helping with a real lost dog search so it seemed perfectly reasonable to throw lots at her. And she worked through everything perfectly. It's been lovely seeing this team progress. Pree has her own style and her handler has worked hard to not only understand this, but really embrace how she works. Team Pree are right up there with all the other experienced teams. Great work today from Team Pree 👏 👍 🙌
