We're in for another hot week ☀️ Unfortunately this means that our pets often suffer which means it is important to keep them cool and out of the heat wherever possible. Recently, the Royal College have published a new heat related illness compass as a guide for dog owners of what symptoms to look out for and when to seek veterinary care for your pet. It is so important for your pets health to keep them in a cool, shaded space during the day when the weather becomes hot and and to keep them well hydrated.
Its is also important to be aware of water intoxication in dogs which is caused when a dog swallows too much water often from playing in water with toys, biting a garden hose or from garden pet water fountains, symptoms of this include vomiting, loss of balance, heavy drooling and possible seizures. Please also be advised not to let your dog drink directly from a garden hose as the water within the hose can become dangerously hot and can also expose them to harmful chemicals. It is also important not to wet them with the water from the hose pipe until it has been running enough to cool down. It is advised to keep your dog hydrated by offering fresh water in a bowl rather than water toys.
If you are concerned that your dog may be showing any signs of a heat related illness it is important to immediately cool them down wetting them with cool water and contacting us for advise as soon as possible. The best way to cool your dog down is pour cool (not freezing) water of your dog's body (do not cover the fur with a towel as this then traps the heat) and offer them small sips of fresh cool water.
We hope you find this information helpful.
