Dachshund (pronounced DAKS hund)
š¾Originated in Germany as a hunting dog - the name quite literally translates into ābadger dogā - used to hunt and flush out badgers and other small burrowing animals such as ferrets & rabbits or to track larger wounded game such as deer
š¾Physical features such as their long bodies and short legs allow them to easily navigate tight underground tunnels.
Their chunky paws give them extra digging strength in heavy soil.
Their āextra loud barkā that we are all very familiar with enables their owner to locate them when underground.
Bold & courageous - sometimes described by our customers as ālittle man syndromeā or āthinks sheās ten menā but a necessary personality trait for their original breeding purpose - to boldly face any threat or prey in a confined space.
š¾These noisy little terror tots can also be extremely loyal & affectionate to their owners. That also comes with being stubborn & Independent - a necessity again for their original breeding purpose - being able to work independently without human guidance.
But they are also very playful, of course they LOVE TO DIG, and exploring the outdoors is something they absolutely love to do.
š¾Which is why it is really super important to keep these little tinkers on a lead - and one that will not allow them to slip out of, as they are fantastic escape artists. And with their natural tendency to explore and burrow, they can easily get themselves into trouble.
