Unfortunately we live in an era where you have to be very careful who you trust with dog training. Too many people will take your money and claim they can help you when they can't.

I don't like bashing other trainers - I like to assume anyone in this industry loves dogs and wants to help people. I assume they have good intentions.

But some people simply aren't experienced enough. Their best intentions cannot overcome a knowledge gap. They take on cases they should turn down.

So it's on you as an owner to do your homework and choose a trainer wisely to protect your time, money, and your dog.

There are many fantastic trainers out there - I'm lucky enough to know so many. Don't let a bad experience put you off finding someone who can really help you.

The difference between the life your dog lives now and the life you want for them is one thing...

Your decision to make it happen.

Our dogs are only with us for a short time. Don't waste that time letting them live stressed, scared, and unfulfilled.

You'll never regret taking action that expands their world. Trust me. πŸ™Œ

Why distracting your dog won't help ‡️

If your dog is reactive, I totally understand why you're tossing food on the ground or asking for "look at me" and desperately trying to keep them from looking at the trigger...

If you don't, they blow up barking and lunging. It's stressful and frustrating for both you and your dog and ruins your walks.

And you're certainly not alone - distraction is the number one thing I see reactive dog owners trying, even sometimes at the advice of a "trainer".

But here's the problem: If you only ever distract your dog to prevent reactions, you and your dog's ability to handle that situation does not improve.

As long as your dog is never looking at the trigger, how can they ever learn to see triggers and feel/act differently?

But the good news is that you absolutely can create long-term change - the owners I work with are proving it every day!

Once you know how to address the reactivity, part of actively working on it means you go from dreading seeing triggers to actually hoping you see them on your walk! Because every trigger is then an opportunity to put into practice your training and change your dog's behaviour patterns in the long-term.

If you want to learn how I help my students overcome reactivity and actually enjoy relaxing walks with their dog, comment "DETAILS" and I'll send you the details of my online programme made for owners like you.

Most of the dog owners I help reach out to me when they're at a low point. They feel guilty not knowing how to help their dog. They feel like they've tried everything and nothing has worked. They feel like they're failing their dogs. They're considering rehoming.

If you're feeling that way about your dog right now, let this be proof that there is hope and things can get better. ❀️

Comment or DM me the word "DETAILS" if you want to know more about my online programme that's giving owners hope and finally showing them how to unlock success with their dog.

Most people have no idea when they're harming their relationship with their dog πŸ’”

Here are the 3 most common ways you may be damaging trust with your dog:

1️⃣ - Your communication is confusing

If your communication isn't consistent and reliable for your dog, they cannot trust you to be clear with them and provide them the information they need. In situations where they're confused or stressed, this only adds more confusion and more stress for them. 😫

2️⃣ - You don't offer guidance when they're struggling

This can happen when you either don't read the signals to know that they're struggling or you know they're struggling but don't know how to offer them the right guidance. If you leave them to their own devices without sufficient support and help in a difficult situation, you dog learns they cannot rely on you when things get tough. πŸ˜“

3️⃣ - You allow people/dogs to invade their space

A lot of well-intentioned owners think they should let their dog greet lots of people and other dogs on walks. But if your dog is at all overwhelmed and their space isn't respected, they'll quickly lose trust in you to protect their space and keep them comfortable. I see this causing reactivity all the time when the dog feels the need to go on the defensive because they know their human won't do it for them. πŸ˜”

If you want better trust with your dog, the starting point is to learn to read their stress signals better, then build more reliable communication and advocate for them and learn how to support them when they struggle. πŸ™Œβ€οΈ

Resource guarding can feel really overwhelming and scary to deal with - in those moments when your dog is guarding something, they seem totally unlike themselves and there is a very real risk of a bite.

But solving resource guarding doesn't have to be stressful - the process is actually quite simple once you understand the underlying root cause and take the right steps to address it.

The transformation in Winnie in just a few short months is proof - and her owner didn't spend hours a dog on training either. Like most of us, her owner is really busy but was able to make this change by consistently putting in a few minutes of work daily.

If your dog is a resource guarder, then I hope this story inspires you to seek the help and support you need.

If you'd like to know more about my online programme, send me a DM and I'd love to chat with you about how I can help you and your dog. 😊

When Dexter's owner joined my online programme, visitors to the house was their most stressful scenario, especially with male visitors.

They'd tried everything they could think of, including distractions and clicker training, but nothing was working.

Less than 3 months later, a visit from family put their training to the test - when this male Ubcle Barry previously visited, Dexter barked and was stressed out the entire time.

But this time it only took a few days for them to become friends with Dexter actively seeking interaction quietly and calmly.

If your dog panics when guests come over, let this be proof that there is hope - you just need access to the right knowledge and support. 🩡
