Where do your frustrations lie when it comes to efficiencies and effectiveness in the calf shed?

The devil is in the detail when it comes to successful calf rearing, balancing efficiency and effectiveness in equal measure:

-How easy is it for you to clean out your hoppers?
-How easily can calves access water?
-What’s the barrier to calves getting colostrum in their first hour?

These are the questions to ask yourself as a team - are there any small changes you can make that would make YOUR lives easier, as well as improving calf health?

Blowfly strike occurs in waves, and with the warm summer weather continuing, the risk period is still high. The first fly lays her eggs in damp/dirty areas on the sheep, and the odour from this strike rapidly attracts other blowflies, and the larvae start to feed on the living tissue of the sheep. Timing of preventative measures is key to success!!

• 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 - appropriate product choice depends on the class of sheep, age, withdrawal periods, shearing and lambing dates, etc. More than one application may be required. Time application before a period of challenge.
• 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 - dagging, crutching and shearing, together with an effective worm control strategy, are important ways risk can be reduced.
• 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐥𝐲 - flies are attracted to wounds caused by footrot and to the feet themselves.
• 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Fly traps, prompt disposal of deadstock, grazing more exposed pastures.
