Mr Nathan Laffy of ‘Grovery Gundogs’
A true icon of the British gundog scene, Nathan has built an outstanding career with Labrador Retrievers that spans dedication, quiet excellence, and a deep love for the sport.
Nathan first represented England in 2010 as Captain of the Anglesey team, a role he held with distinction for five years. Since then he has proudly run for his country on numerous occasions with six different dogs. He has been a valued member of England team that have lifted the Skinners World Cup twice and enjoyed multiple victories at the Game Fair.
His trialling record is truly remarkable. Nathan has qualified for the IGL Championship 11 times with five different dogs and has won over 50 trials with more than 20 dogs during his career. Highlights include:
• 2013: 2nd place at the IGL with FTCh Abbotsleigh Emu
• 2019: DOM & Guns’ Choice with FTCh Think Twice Zero to Hero
• 2021: 3rd place at the IGL with FTCh Think Twice Zero to Hero (“Chance”)
Nathan qualified the outstanding “Chance” a record-breaking six times consecutively a feat matched by few. Bred by Laura Lazzaretto, Chance remains the most successful Golden Retriever in UK field trial history. In 2025 he qualified two dogs for the IGL, including his current England Squad dog, OFTW Spireview Kodi at Grovery.
Nathan turned professional in 2017 after many years successfully competing at the highest level while balancing a full-time job and family life. He holds B Panel Judge status and runs his kennels under the Grovery affix. Through Grovery Gundog Training he delivers group and one-to-one training in the South East, along with popular training days across the UK. Handlers appreciate his direct, no-nonsense approach and meticulous attention to detail. In the line, Nathan is famously calm and unflappable — cool, collected, and completely focused.
He also proudly carries the Isleofman affix, kindly passed to him by his great friend Chris Turner, for whom he ran dogs between 2010 and 2016. Nathan continues to honour Chris’s memory through the dogs he breeds and trains.
