We are delighted to introduce Roddy Forbes, who is taking on the role of Scotland Gundog Team Captain for the next three year term.

It is an honour and a privilege for Roddy to take on the role for a second time, and he takes great pride in leading the team forward. Scotland currently has some of the best dogs the country has ever seen, something which has been demonstrated by the team’s recent success on the world stage and in field trials.
These results are testament to the hard work and determination of both handlers and dogs, and Roddy is delighted to be taking the team on from such a strong position.

Roddy has been involved in gundogs for well over 40 years and has made up three FTCHs, along with many other novice and open winners. He founded the Moray Firth Spaniel and Retriever Club with his brother Brian in 1988 and has served on the IGL Committee, the Field Trial Liaison Council and the Field Trial Committee for the Royal Kennel Club, where he remains a member. In 1997, he was one of the three founding members of the Scottish Gamekeepers Association and was elected as its first Chairman.

He has represented Scotland more than 30 times in international competition, winning the CLA Gundog International three times and judging it twice. He has also judged the IGL Retriever Championship four times, as well as the Irish Championship and the European Championships in 2012. Away from gundogs, Roddy has somehow also found the time to develop a rather more genteel interest in collecting antique teapots.
A highlight of Roddy’s career came when the IGL Retriever Championship was held at Cawdor Estate, where he was Steward of the Beat and Headkeeper. In 2017, Cawdor Estate was also the venue for the Skinners World Cup, where Roddy and his son Fraser set up the tests.

In 2016, Roddy was invited to select a Scottish Retriever Team to compete at the late Queen’s 90th Birthday Home International Trial at Windsor, which Scotland won. In 2018, he captained Scotland to its first victory at the Skinners World Cup at Hamstead Park, England, and successfully defended the title the following year at Glanusk Park, Wales.

The Scottish Team was also invited to compete at the 2019 International Working Test in Holland, where Scotland won. This was the first British Retriever Team to win on European soil, with Roddy also being the top-scoring dog with FTW Glenpatrick Mica of Carnochway, better known as Kate. Kate is grandmother to the current IGL Champion, FTCH Carnochway Red Rooster. Roddy and Kate also won the 40-dog Kennel Club Open in 2015.
In 2021, Roddy captained Scotland to victory at the Home International at Scone Game Fair, after which he stepped down as Captain.

Jayne Coley is a highly respected Labrador Retriever trainer, handler, breeder and A Panel Field Trial Judge who has made up 12 Field Trial Champions…
(seven of them homebred) and bred 11 champions over her 30 years of breeding quality litters…
Jaynes journey began 44 years ago when her husband, Ian, bought her a Labrador puppy for her birthday.

Although that first bitch proved too hot to trial (largely due to Jayne’s own early over-enthusiasm and limited experience), she taught Jayne a great deal and produced her first Field Trial Champion, Waterford Athene.
Jayne then acquired Crosby Rose Piper (of Waterford). She made the bitch up to Field Trial Champion herself, and Piper founded the Waterford line that has underpinned Jayne’s subsequent success.
She typically bred one litter every other year so she could keep a puppy, and she rarely parts with dogs because of her deep love of picking up and beating.
Over the decades she has competed at the highest levels, regularly representing England in the Retriever Team under captains including Stan Harvey, John Halstead and, more recently, David Latham. She has also been honoured to serve on the Committee of the England Gundog Team at the invitation of Kevin Doughty.
An A Panel Kennel Club Judge, Jayne’s first trial as a judge was in 2011 from then She went on after numerous judging appointments to be asked to judge the prestigious International Gundog League (IGL) Retriever Championship on two occasions…and also she was given the honour to judge the Irish Championships in 2015.
Jayne Coley is a member of the Royal Kennel Club, & she sits on its Field Trial Committee, and serves on the committee of the HBBBH.
Her Waterford Labradors have appeared regularly at the top of the sport.

FTCh Waterford Ganton, for example, sired many Field Trial Champions, including the Duke of Buccleuch’s FTCh Buccleuch Xena, who won the Retriever Championship in 2017 under the handling of David Lisett. Dogs from the Waterford line are among those that have achieved the demanding multiple Open-stake qualifications needed for the IGL Championship.
Jayne continues to be recognised by fellow competitors as a valued source of knowledge and experience in the field-trial community and now serves on The England Gundog Team Committee 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
