The absolute bestest boy!!

Ok we had some green mistakes but out of 15 flying changes 12 were clean - they might not have all been beautiful but they were mostly clean šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ’Ŗ

He felt like a proper grown up boy in there today and it took me by surprise as I expect him to get strong but he stayed so rideable!!!! I actually should have taken the opportunity and asked a little more from him but hindsite is great isn’t it - I was over the moon.

We messed up the right pirry but it was better - zig zag was nice, 4’s had one late change at the end and 3’s clean to the left and late to the right (WTF? 🤣)

We got 62% as the pirry error and losing some suppleness in the walk was expensive but this is a test I can really build on. 62% might not sound a lot….but it’s a PB for me at this level

We are back tomorrow for a second go….and I’m going to be braver and trust him a bit more

Thank you Chard Equestrian for a great show as always and a huge thanks to Anna Ross Dressage for sorting me out this week.

Canter half pass…..

Left usually a 7 but right it a bit crap….

I read Carl Hester’s book (Real Life Dressage) on Friday evening - I am a seriously quick reader 🤣

Anyway one of the little nuggets I stole from this book was about the half pass and how looking down at the inside hind can help….not leaning….its to help you get the feel of weighting the inside seat bone

Now you have to be very conscious not to lean as you will actually shove your arse to the outside - that would be a common error - or to balance yourself on the reins - the idea is a more pronounced weight aid with the other aids staying the same - I was careful not to over rotate my shoulder or over use my outside leg - I just wanted the weight shift for a few strides - it worked brilliantly - when I felt her have a little more glide I kept the weight the same and just looked up and she had a much more expressive change at the end of it

Turn your sound up!!!

The whippets were lively this morning - I thought she did brilliantly as she just cracked on straight after - 18 months ago, maybe even a year…..I’d have got off! 🤣🤣🤣

Since learning some TRT she manages herself so much better and moments like these don’t worry me, it’s reinforcing because she doesn’t escalate now - previously this would have upset the whole session as she would have been worried but today - nah! She is good!

They hurtled past at 60mph a few more times through the session and I felt a little tension in the rein but no more than a stride or 2

It must be reinforcing for her too right? Because when I say ā€œit’s ok!ā€ It really is ok

Soz for the ā€œknob headsā€ comment at the end 🤣

Astrid’s first rug 🄹

She was cold coming in today so I grabbed my trusty old Colin Cook exercise sheet and teamed it with a smart Horzehoods Ltd surcingle!

Warming up nicely now - I will trim her feet in a short while and wait for the vet so she can have her second vaccination

One bale a week

That’s roughly what I use per stable - in fact over summer it’s about 1 every 10/11 days for Boris as he is very tidy in his stable.

Even in the depths of winter - I have never used more than 1 bale a week

They don’t eat Gower Granary chopped wheat straw either but for those that do they have you covered….with their chopped r**e straw

It’s a super product, locally sourced, recycleable packaging and a great price. Have a chat with your local merchants about stocking it - it’s well worth it

Is your half pass a bit crap?

Does your horse lose fluidity or balance with the steps like Avalon can?

Our trot lateral work has never been brilliant and as she was always so damn hard to sit to I would avoid sitting trot as much as possible - so compounding the problem really.

Left half pass is ok but to the right really lacks the suppleness she needs so we are back to basics - few steps half pass, few steps shoulder in and repeat - so I can ensure she is around my inside leg and that I’m not using too much hand to get the body bend and that she is off my leg and with me.

It’s far from perfect…..but it’s better

Also…..I could sit and usually she tightens in the back and makes sitting very difficult - hands a little high but one step at a time - this old bird can’t fix everything all at the same time 🤣

If you haven’t got a pair of these yet….youre missing out! I’ve tried virtually every brand and you will not get better than these. Supportive like a breech yet with total freedom in the saddle and half the price of ā€˜so called’ premium brands. It’s an excellent design and a modern forward thinking product that flatters as much as it assists. I wouldn’t be without my Horzehoods Ltd gear - every single piece I have is excellent.
