Most people don’t fail their dog.

They fail the idea they had of them.

A dog isn’t just a pet. It’s a 10 to 15 year commitment to a living, thinking animal with its own thoughts, instincts and biological needs.

It doesn’t come with a guarantee of being easy.

Nobody gets a dog imagining that their dog will have behaviour problems.

But for thousands of owners…that’s their real life.

Early morning or late night walks, planning when they can take their dog outside to avoid triggers.

Nobody imagines they’ll have to do that with their dog. I didn’t!

And when it gets hard, too many give up too easily.

When owners asked a UK rescue to take their dog for behaviour problems, only 1 in 4 accepted free help offered to them.

Commitment means showing up on the bad days too. The owners who stay, learn and fight for their dog are my favourite people to work with.

And I understand that there are other factors at play when it comes to people surrendering their dogs to rescue, but from my experience, a lot of people take the easy way out because it’s more convenient for them.

For the people that do stick by their dogs, you’re not alone, and it can get better.

Meet Taz ✨

Who I’m housesitting for the next 10 days while his mum gets a well earned break in Canada. And let’s just say this boy doesn’t do ā€œnormalā€ dog sitting.

Taz has some serious aggression and an attitude problem. When he’s not happy, he lets you know with his mouth, and he’ll happily put his teeth on his mum and any stranger that gets in his way.

He wasn’t always like this, this behaviour was created by previous trainers who used high level punishment causing him to expect punishment and he resorted to fighting his way out.

This is where Jack comes in as he has spent the past few months reversing this incredible blunder from those trainers.

I’ve been lucky enough to go to almost all of Taz’s sessions with Jack. I’ve seen what makes him tick and what pi**es him off.

Being a spectator has really helped set me up for this experience with him because it helped me understand him better.

While I’m with him, walks are unfortunately off the table. There’s too much risk of him going for me as this hasn’t been addressed yet in training while the fundamentals are still being laid down.

Instead I’ve had to get creative: obedience work, structured play, decompression time, and making sure he knows exactly when it’s time to switch on and when it’s time to switch off.

I’m here to be his friend and to show him he doesn’t have to fight everyone and we can cooperate seamlessly as we have been doing.

Also I’m here to not f**k up Jack’s work which we’ve been working on together to ensure I’m safe and his progress in training is being prioritised and maintained.

It’s still early days but I already love him and it’s going well.

I can see what his owner sees in him now. He’s a very misunderstood dog who was dealt with poorly by ā€œtopā€ trainers and his mum had to pay the price for trusting their frankly horrible advice about his behaviour issues.

He still needs a few more difficult conversations with Jack to come to the other side, but I know he’ll get there.

He is one of a kind, has a lot of love to give and he has one hell of a mum to go on this journey with.

Stay tuned for more of Taz :)

ā€œMy dog is a fussy eaterā€

I hear this all the time and I get it, because Oscar ā€œwasā€ too.

Before I was a trainer, I was putting cheese on his meals just to get him to finish his dinner.

I went as far as changing his food all the time because maybe he just didn’t like venison or beef.

I’d leave the food out all day so he could go back and eat it when he felt like.

I was doing all the things that were killing his food drive!!!

He’s a rescue from Macedonia. When he arrived in my home after I adopted him, he’d sniff a piece of cheese and walk away.

This video is one I actually sent to a client to show what’s possible, because food drive isn’t something a dog has or doesn’t have. It’s something you BUILD.

Now? He works his heart out for piece of mediocre kibble.

He will also work his heart out, at the same level, for a piece of ham.

If your dog ā€œisn’t motivated for food,ā€ you don’t have a broken dog. You have a dog that has never had to work for anything and now you’re asking it to work and expecting miracles.

Anyway, I have a guide that teaches you how to build this level of food motivation. It also covers toy drive if your dog doesn’t play.

Comment FUSSY and I’ll send it over. :)

Every single repetition of behaviour is feedback from your dog.

If your dog is struggling with the world around them, it usually means the framework they’ve been given is either too loose and confusing or they lack consistency.

ā€œWe just want a family dog for weekend strolls and coffee runs.ā€ šŸ’€

Best of luck.

Meet the working line spaniel ✨

A dog that has a Ferrari engine for a brain packed inside a Mini Cooper.

I asked for one command, and now I’ve unlocked a self sustained motion machine powered entirely by crackhead energy and the burning desire to never stop.

Olive has now been in her Orbit for an infinite amount of time.

Her brain runs at 10,000 RPM. She’s actually still going but I’ve headed back upstairs and I’m watching her from the window of my apartment with an iced coffee. ā˜•ļø

If you don’t give them a job, they will invent one. And people will wonder why they have a mad spaniel with behavioural problems.

Well, I hope this gives you a clue šŸ•µļøā€ā™€ļø
