Training a reactive dog .

Heres a few clips of today's session with Baxter the labradoodle .
Making sure to keep the dog under threshold ( giving enough distance that the dog doesn't react/tense up/ bark ). We watched and loose lead walked from a distance and gradually worked our way closer .
Splitting the session into play, rest , train and rest .

When it comes to recall, the best motivator you can have is your bond with the dog. The dog should want to be with you. You should be your dogs leader , it's friend , its world . When I recall these guys they rush back. They can't wait to get back to me . Be a fair, loving leader for your dog and all aspects of your relationship and training will flourish.

Are you having problems with your dogs recall?

This video is of a pionter cross with a really high prey drive that i have been working with . In this clip I waited til she was far away chasing a bird before giving her the shout .

The foundation of fixing so many behavioural issues with dogs , like leash pulling , reactivity etc, is engagement, eye contact , little check in's . It's the best way to stay in communication with your dog . This video is from my second hour long session with Seamus. He's a bit reactive around joggers or people on bikes so we got to work on the engagement while walking .

Waited til Cooper the spaniel starting following a scent trail before recalling him. Good practise for recalling around distractions in busier areas .

Car chasing collies ... the dog thinks it's chasing the car away by lunging at it . when the car keeps going it inadvertently reinforces the behaviour . So today we sat at a junction where the cars on our side of the road have to stop . The cars that keep going on the main road as far enough away for him to watch and not get over threshold so he's calm enough to look and not react . A good exercise after a long walk and play on the beach
