Halloween risks 👻🎃

As we come close to Halloween, here are some risks to be aware of for your pets 🙂

Chocolate 🍫
Milk and dark chocolate is toxic at certain levels, the darker the worse for your pets. Lighter chocolates are still dangerous and can problems from their high fat content.

Sweets 🍬
High fat and sugar content can cause pancreatitis or a very upset stomach.

Sugar free sweets (xylitol) 🍭
Xylitol is in most sugar free products and is highly toxic. It causes blood sugar levels to plummet dangerously low which can kill a pet.

Choking and scavenging risks 🙊
Sweet wrappers and costume accessories pose a choking or foreign body risk for animals who are prone to scavenging.

Carved pumpkins 🎃
Candles in pumpkins can be a burn or fire hazard especially if next to or inside the house. Batteries in fake lights can be chewed on and cause chemical burns.

Trick or treaters 🧛‍♂️
Frequent visitors, doorbells and knocking can make your animals anxious or fearful. Opening the door multiple times can also pose a risknfor dogs escaping. Outdoor cats maybe safer inside as drivers may be distracted or they might get scared off.

Autumn 🍁

Autumn is bringing the much needed cooler weather and rain ☔️

But with it also comes specific dangers we have to be wary about. The dangers of grass seeds and heat stroke start to decrease but different risks pop up ⚠️

🐿 Acorns 🐿
Contain tannins which can case an upset stomsch or liver/kidney issues in high quantities.

🌰 Conkers 🌰
Contain aesculin, a toxin that causes upset stomachs in small amounts but can be fatal in large amounts.

🍄 Toadstools 🍄
Mushrooms can be edible or poisonous, some are mildly irritating to the gut and some are highly toxic.

🍎 Fallen fruits 🍎
Fermented and mouldy fruit, such as apples, will give your dog an upset stomach. Some stones/pips also contain toxins and may cause problems if large amounts are consumed.

🎆 Fireworks 🎆
Fireworks are very scary to all animals. You can use music and television to help drown them out and make sure they have a safe space to crawl into if they want. Medication can be a useful tool in animals that become very distressed by them.
Spent fireworks are also very dangerous if a dog licks at them.

🎃 Halloween 🎃
Between the doorbell going off, strange spooky costumes and all the chocolates and sweets lying about. Halloween can pose quite the risk or stress to our pets if not handled correctly.

🦳 A Salt & Pepper Schnauzer 🦳

Monty the 9 year old Miniature Schnauzer had a lump on his neck that we took a Fine Needle Aspirate Sample of 💉

We sent it off to the lab to see and will make a treatment plan depending on what it is 🙂

We hope Monty forgives us for the little pokes and we are all crossing our fingers and toes that it comes back as nothing to worry about 😊

😂 Puppy Maple Nibbles Vet Gemma 😂

Sweet tiny baby whippet puppy Maple came in for her vaccinations 😊

But she couldn't leave without showing everyone how "ferocious" she is and that she is not to be messed with 🫡

She got cuddles from just about every staff member in the practice, and rightly so with that face! 😍

We hope she stays this cute and tiny forever 🥰
