One step forward, two steps back.

Puppy training can feel a bit like that sometimes.

You have a few really good days where everything seems to be clicking into place. Your puppy is listening, settling, coming back when called and generally making you feel as though you might actually know what you are doing.

Then suddenly you have a day where they appear to have forgotten absolutely everything.

That can be frustrating, especially when you feel as though you have already taught it.

The thing to remember is that puppies are learning an enormous amount all at once.

They have come into a completely new home, with new people, new routines, new expectations and a whole new set of rules.

They did not arrive with a little guidebook from their mum explaining that they are supposed to toilet outside, leave your shoes alone, settle on a mat, walk nicely on a lead and come back when you call.

None of that is obvious to them.

They do not arrive speaking English either.

To your puppy, words such as “sit”, “come”, “leave” or even their own name are simply sounds to begin with. They have to learn what those sounds mean.

In many ways, they are learning a whole new language at the same time as learning how to live in your world.

Progress will not always be neat or linear. Some days will feel brilliant. Some will feel like hard work.

That does not mean the training is failing. It means your puppy is still learning.

Consistency, patience and plenty of repetition really do matter.

Do you definitely want a puppy?

It is worth asking.

Puppies are wonderful. They are funny, affectionate, chaotic, exhausting and, at times, absolutely relentless.

There is the toilet training, the chewing, the biting, the disturbed sleep, the lead walking, the recall, the settling, the learning to be left alone, the learning of household boundaries and, somewhere in amongst all of that, trying to help them make sense of the world.

Progress is rarely a lovely straight line upwards either.

You will have days when everything seems to be coming together beautifully, followed by a day when you are fairly sure your puppy has forgotten everything they have ever learnt.

That is puppyhood.

Sometimes it really does feel like one step forward and two steps back.

One thing I think is worth considering before bringing a puppy home is whether you actually want the experience of raising a puppy, or whether what you really want is the relationship you picture having with an adult dog.

Those are not quite the same thing.

For some people, an older puppy or an adult dog may actually be a much better fit.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with deciding that the puppy stage is not for you.

Choosing the right dog is not about doing what everyone else does. It is about being realistic about what will work for you, your household and your life.

How much dog do you actually want?

It sounds like a slightly odd question, but I think it’s one worth asking before you bring a puppy home.

A dog does not just slot neatly into one little corner of your existing life.

They affect quite a lot of it.

Your mornings change. Your weekends change. Your evenings change. Holidays need a bit more thought. Spontaneous days out are not quite as spontaneous when there is a dog waiting at home.

You may suddenly find yourself choosing a car based on whether there is enough room for a crate, rethinking some of your fabric choices and whether white or cream was ever a particularly sensible colour palette for your home, and discovering that dog hair, mud and treat crumbs have somehow become part of your everyday wardrobe.

Some people absolutely love that.

They want long walks, training, dog-friendly holidays, days out, activities and a dog that becomes a huge part of how they spend their time.

Other people want something much quieter. A lovely companion, a couple of walks a day, a potter around the park and a dog that is generally happy to fit around family life.

Neither is wrong.

The important thing is being realistic about what you actually want before choosing the dog.

How much time do you have for training? How much exercise do you genuinely enjoy? Do you have children, cats or other dogs? Do you regularly have visitors? Do you want your dog to come everywhere with you?

You are not just choosing a puppy.

You are choosing a lifestyle for perhaps the next 12–15 years.

Be careful when you say you want a clever dog…

People often tell me they want a really intelligent dog.

It sounds ideal, doesn’t it?

A clever dog. Easy to train. Quick to learn. Brilliant fun.

Sometimes, yes.

A highly intelligent, highly driven dog can be absolutely fantastic if you enjoy training and want dog-related activities to become a big part of your life.

Clever does not necessarily mean easy to live with, though.

A dog that was bred to work all day, solve problems and respond to tiny changes in its environment may need a lot more input than someone who simply wants a lovely companion for a couple of walks, a potter around the park and perhaps a Sunday lunch at the pub.

That does not make one type of dog better than another.

It simply means they suit different people.

The really important question is not, “How clever is this breed?”

It is:

“Do I actually want to live with what comes with that cleverness?”

Do you enjoy training? Do you want to spend time teaching new skills? Do you like finding ways to keep a dog mentally occupied? Do you want dog training and activities to become one of your hobbies?

If the answer is yes, a bright, busy, driven dog might be exactly your cup of tea.

If the answer is no, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a dog that is happy with a rather quieter life.

Choosing the right dog is not about choosing the most impressive breed.

It is about choosing the dog that fits the life you genuinely want to live.

Love the breed? Make sure you love what comes with it.

It is very easy to see a beautifully trained dog in a film, online or out with its owner and think, “Yes. That’s exactly the dog I want.”

What you are seeing, though, is one dog at one moment in time.

You are not necessarily seeing the genetics, the training, the management, the experience or the hours of work that have gone into creating that dog.

Some of the breeds that look most impressive when they are trained and working beautifully can also be some of the most demanding dogs to live with.

That is why breed really does matter.

Most breeds were originally developed to do a particular job, and those jobs shaped behaviour as well as appearance.

Spaniels were bred to hunt. Retrievers were bred to find and bring things back. Terriers were bred to pursue vermin. Herding breeds were selected to notice and control movement. Guarding breeds were bred to watch, assess and protect.

That does not mean every dog of a particular breed will behave in exactly the same way. Dogs are individuals.

Genetics still matter, though, and some behaviours are simply more likely to come naturally to certain types of dog.

A spaniel spending most of its walk with its nose glued to the ground is not being awkward or ignoring the lovely countryside. It is doing something generations of spaniels were bred to find incredibly rewarding.

A retriever carrying your slipper, tea towel or somebody’s sock around the house may be making a choice that makes perfect sense to a retriever.

The more you understand what a breed was designed to do, the easier it becomes to ask the really useful question:

Will I actually enjoy living with those traits every day?

Loving the look of a breed is one thing.

Loving the reality of living with that breed is quite another.

You’re not choosing a puppy. You're choosing a lifestyle.
I think that’s quite an important distinction.

When you first start thinking about getting a puppy, it’s very easy to picture the lovely bit. The walks, the cuddles, the days out, the dog curled up beside you in the evening, all of that.

What you don’t necessarily picture is the small land shark with very little bladder control, absolutely no understanding of your household rules and a fairly firm belief that your shoes have been bought specifically for chewing.

That gorgeous adult dog you have in your head doesn’t arrive fully formed at eight weeks old.

There’s quite a lot that happens in between.

Before choosing a puppy, one of the most useful questions you can ask yourself is not simply, “Which breed do I like?” It’s:

“What sort of dog actually fits the life I have?”

You're potentially choosing a companion for the next 12–15 years. A dog who will affect your mornings, your weekends, your holidays, your car, your furniture and probably the amount of mud you find in places where mud really has no business being.

Looks matter far less than whether the adult dog you end up with actually suits you.

Our small Sunday morning groups are perfect for owners who want to build their confidence while their dogs practice walking neutrally around others. No pressure, no judgment, just good company, good practice and on the spot advice whenever you need it.

This is a five-week programme. The first walk will be held at the Pawsome Partners training venue, with future walks held elsewhere.

All dogs will be walked on long lines and walks will last around 45 minutes to one hour.

Reward schedules are really about communication...

Reward schedules are not really about food.

They are about communication.

They tell the dog what worked, help create clarity, and make learning easier to understand. Used thoughtfully, they help build confidence, reliability, and a much fairer training picture for both ends of the lead.

The goal is not to stop rewarding.

The goal is to reinforce in a way that makes sense for the dog, the behaviour, and the environment you are training in.

That is where good training lives.

Rewards do not disappear, they evolve...

At some point, people often ask when they should stop rewarding.

The honest answer is that rewards do not really disappear. They evolve.

As training progresses, reinforcement may shift from food to play, praise, movement, sniffing, retrieving, or access to the environment. That is not the same as removing reinforcement altogether. It is just changing what payment looks like.

A dog that recalls and then gets sent back to explore has still been rewarded.

A dog that walks nicely and gets to move forward has still been rewarded.

It does not always have to be sausage. But it does still need to matter to the dog.

Real life changes the training picture

Reward schedules do not exist in a little bubble.

What works in the house may not work nearly as well out on a walk, around other dogs, near wildlife, or anywhere your dog finds more exciting than you.

That is not your dog failing. It is information.

It tells us the picture has changed and our reinforcement may need to change with it.

A dog that can recall beautifully in the garden may still need much better pay outdoors. A dog that can walk nicely at home may need far more support in a busy environment.

Real life matters. Good training takes that into account.
