I’m hoping to get this page more active now, as sharing images from outreach visits is at the customers discretion I’ll be starting a new series of 🧩Enrichment of the week🧩. Every Monday I’ll choose an enrichment item and throughout the week post videos of various species interacting with it.

The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria describes enrichment as ā€œa process of continually providing animals with behavioural opportunities that are typical of their species, with the aim of improving their welfare.ā€

There are many types of enrichment including sensory, locomotory, cognitive, nutritional, social and environmental - often one activity overlaps to fit multiple categories!

Many of these can be tried at home with store bought or made enrichment items. Remember to disinfect between species and individuals, or have duplicates of the same store bought item to reduce any disease or health risk. Eg don’t put meat in an item you’re then also going to use with herbivores unless it’s plastic or steel and able to be sterilised well.

The first enrichment item is this simple puzzle toy (Pets UK). This is especially good for animals with a good sense of smell, however those with poor smell are still capable of learning that under each lid there may be food!

Good news, I had my inspection at my new premises last week and have now received my licence allowing me to provide outreach full time.

The next step will be the zoo licensing process which will allow everyone to visit the animals on site ā˜ŗļø

On the way to The Kiwa Centre for a Parrot keeper workshop, to learn lots of new things which I can apply to the resident lorikeets and macaws!

I usually film training as it’s good to look back and see why things may have gone right or wrong, so I’ll start sharing them too ā˜ŗļø my biggest challenge is moving all the birds away from traditional falconry methods to restraint free methods (unless in case of emergency, in which case grab the bird if needed!!) But the harder work in the short term is worth it in the long run. Ben has always had glove issues so getting the other birds content on the glove without food shouldn’t be as tricky!
