๐ŸŽ Sometimes itโ€™s easy to forget how far youโ€™ve come ๐ŸŽ

Today has been a good day ๐Ÿฅฐ

Today I have been able to help:

๐Ÿ‡ A horse rider who had chronic lower back pain, which prevented her from standing for more than one hour without it being a problem.

Weโ€™ve spent the last few weeks helping her with foot balance (no foot no horse, well the same goes for people), releasing muscle and joint tension by addressing the biomechanical movement chains that can cause lower back pain. Weโ€™ve also devised a small, manageable balance and core exercise programme which is massively helping all those important injury prevention reflexes in her body fire up.

The result:

โœ… Better movement
โœ… Better posture
โœ… And a hugely happier lower back, especially in the saddle ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ‘‘ We also saw our treadmill Queen, who has been using the treadmill for several years. She has a bucket list of old injures and arthritic joints, but thanks to a team effort, sheโ€™s out there, still smiling and her hugely dedicated owner is living her best pony life ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป๐Ÿฅฐ

๐Ÿ’ฆ Weโ€™ve had several regular treadmill clients, whose horses are looking very pleased with themselves, and said hello to some lovely old clients who have returned for more water treadmill help ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

๐Ÿค• A chiropractic session on a mare thatโ€™s feeling a bit ouchy, so a chat with the vet to make sure sheโ€™s getting all the care and attention she needs. Thereโ€™s that team thing again๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐ŸŽ‰ And finally the beyond amazing Jo and Bonnie who are back in keeping up the fitness and core strength hot off their inspirational journey from John Oโ€™Groates to Landsend ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฅณ

Iโ€™m living the dream I mapped out 25 years ago when I first went to university to train in human chiropractic. Lucky me ๐Ÿ’ซ

Thank you to all of my clients for being a part of the bigger equine health and performance picture and to Auntie Ella for being a fabulous treadmill wingwoman ๐Ÿคฉ

This ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Please have a look at your bridle headpieces.

Pressure points (think a tight hat or sunglasses, after 2 minutes you want them off) can be the cause of:

๐Ÿคฏ Evasion
๐Ÿคฏ High Head carriage
๐Ÿคฏ Going behind the vertical
๐Ÿคฏ Reluctance to engage the core
๐Ÿคฏ Headshaking

The list of performance issues goes on.

And it might just be that your brow band is too tight and is pulling the headpiece forward.

Please get your bridle checked ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

It doesnโ€™t always mean you need a new bridle. It might however mean you get a horse that is comfortable and you can chuck the martingale away? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

If you would like any help with with, please do message me, Iโ€™m here to help ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

๐Ÿด your horses dirt can tell you a massive story!

Have a look at this horse's headpiece.

You can see that the left side of the headpiece has considerably more grease on than the right. The right virtually has non.

What does that mean?
In this case the
- pressure is being focused onto this one side in on a very small surface area
- its on the back of the headpiece, showing that the headpiece is being tilted backwards
- the headpiece doesn't touch evenly over the whole surface area therefore doesn't suit anatomically to this horse. As pressure should be evenly spread for optimum comfort.

This horse's body worker had picked up on a tightness at the base of the ear to poll region. Its likely that this style of split headpiece was focusing the pressure there and causing discomfort and tightness.

What does your dirt say about your bridle (and saddle) fit? You can do the same with a saddle. Take the saddle cloth away and just ride with the saddle against the back. See the pressure distribution of grease on the underside. It will say a lot about how you ride and how the horse responds.

๐Ÿฆ† You know itโ€™s going to be a good day when your lovely client turns up with the little rubber ducks weโ€™ve been saying for ages we needed to get ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜‚

Have they lost the plot you may rightly ask?! ๐Ÿซฃ

Yes!! ๐Ÿ˜‚

We have been busy rehabbing their fabulous yearling post a very traumatic injury, and we decided some bath time toys might be needed to keep him entertained ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ›

Said yearling hasnโ€™t met them yet, however hereโ€™s his rather more sensible friend enjoying them instead ๐Ÿ˜„

๐Ÿ› Just to clarify for the slightly saner folks out there, no rubber duckies will ever be in the water when the horses are working ๐Ÿฆ†

We might be getting a really lovely summer (Iโ€™m questioning why I bothered to take a week off abroad ๐Ÿค”) however, there are some rather big consequences that we all need to pay attention to regarding this baked earth and our beloved horses ๐Ÿ‡

Someone said it better than I can:

๐Ÿ‡The Biomechanical Effects of Hard Ground on Horses ๐Ÿ‡

โ€œHard surfaces alter the biomechanics of a horseโ€™s movement. When a horseโ€™s hoof strikes a rigid surface, it produces higher peak ground reaction forces compared to softer footing. According to Parkes et al. (2015) in the Equine Veterinary Journal, these higher forces lead to increased concussion up the limb, particularly affecting joints such as the fetlock, carpus (knee), and the distal interphalangeal joint (coffin joint).

The repetitive concussive forces can lead to:

Microtrauma in bones and cartilage
Joint inflammation (synovitis)
Tendon and ligament strain, especially in the superficial digital flexor tendon and suspensory ligament
Early onset of degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)

Were all struggling to keep our horses fit at the moment.

We can keep praying for rain, however do remember that the water treadmill:

๐Ÿ’ฆ Has minimal concussion to the joints
๐Ÿ’ฆ 20 minutes is the equivalent to a hard schooling session
๐Ÿ’ฆ Helps build core strength
๐Ÿ’ฆ Definitely helps build stamina
๐Ÿ’ฆ And as many are finding, is a huge solution to not being able to do much fast work.

Itโ€™s not rocket science folks, we all know how our shins hurt if we over do it on hard ground, why should our horses be any different? ๐Ÿซฃ

Iโ€™m back at work on Monday, ready to help you all still achieve greatness this summer ๐Ÿ‡
