Using evidenced based practice I feel it is paramount to use objective outcome measures in veterinary physiotherapy. I have an instrumented treadmill, the first Zebris Canidgait that is publicly available in the country. This enables thorough, objective and repeatable gait analysis which can identify problems, guide treatment protocols and ensure progress. The zebris can be used prior to finding a

problem to obtain a base gait profile for an animal to allow for early identification of gait alterations which is especially useful in working and/or sporting dogs. Please get in touch if you have any questions about the Zebris treadmill.

✔ Professional teaching dog (past students will know what a very good girl I am 💁🏼‍♀️)
✔ Expert retriever – if you throw it, I'll bring it back. If you didn't throw it... I might bring it back anyway.
✔ Water location specialist – puddle, stream, lake... if there's water nearby, I'll find it.
✔ Passenger Princess – always ready for a trip in the car.
✔ Teddy collector with an impressive portfolio.
✔ Full-time people lover – strangers are just friends I haven't met yet.

Special Skills:
🐾 Understands fluent English (selectively... especially if it involves "walk," "treat," or "where's Teddy?")
🐾 Convinced she's actually a human.
🐾 Excellent at boosting everyone's mood.
🐾 Happy to demonstrate exercises... provided payment is made in biscuits.

Weaknesses:
❌ Being told she has to sleep downstairs.
❌ Walking past water without investigating it.
❌ Leaving a teddy behind.

🧠 Your Horse Is Always Giving You Feedback

Horses can't tell us when something feels uncomfortable—but they do communicate in other ways.

Sometimes the signs are obvious, but often they're subtle:
🐴 Swishing the tail more than usual
🐴 Pinning the ears during tacking up
🐴 Becoming fidgety when mounting
🐴 Finding one movement more difficult than before
🐴 Being less willing to work than they normally are

These behaviours don't necessarily mean your horse is in pain, but they do tell us it's worth paying attention.

Rather than dismissing a change as "naughty" behaviour, it's always worth asking:
Has something changed?

Listening to the small changes in behaviour can help us spot potential issues early and keep our horses happier and more comfortable.

Because every behaviour is communication. ❤️

🐾 Could your dog's nails be affecting their movement?

Long nails aren't just a grooming issue—they can impact the way your dog stands and walks.

When nails are too long, they contact the ground before the paw pads, pushing the toes backwards and altering posture. Over time, this can place extra strain on the feet, joints and muscles, potentially affecting your dog's comfort and movement.

A good rule of thumb: if you can hear your dog's nails clicking on hard floors, it's probably time for a trim.

The good news? You're not on your own. Vets, veterinary nurses, groomers and other allied animal professionals can all help keep your dog's nails at a healthy length.

As a veterinary physiotherapist, I always include nail length as part of my assessment because sometimes small changes can make a big difference to how a dog moves.

Waiting until your dog is old, arthritic, or struggling before introducing a car ramp or steps is often too late.

Here's why:

🐾 Puppies repeatedly jumping in and out of the car place unnecessary forces through developing joints and soft tissues.
💪 Owners lifting dogs in and out of the car increase their own risk of injuries.
🐶 Senior dogs who are painful or unsteady are often reluctant or even fearful of using a completely unfamiliar ramp or set of steps.

The best time to teach your dog to use a ramp or steps is when they're young, healthy, and confident. Like any life skill, introducing it early makes it far easier to use when they really need it.

Research supports this approach. A 2018 study by Pardey and colleagues found that as car boot height increased, the peak forces through a dog's forelimbs also increased significantly when jumping down. The authors concluded that higher vehicle boots may increase loading on anatomical structures, potentially contributing to injury risk, and recommended further investigation into the long-term effects of repeated jumping.

A few minutes spent teaching your puppy to confidently use a ramp or steps today could help protect both their body—and yours—for years to come.

🐴 MYTH: If my horse isn't lame, they don't need physiotherapy.

Lameness is often the final sign that something isn't right.

Long before a horse becomes obviously lame, they may be compensating in subtle ways.

You might notice:
• Difficulty bending one way
• Changes in canter leads
• Resistance in transitions
• Uneven muscle development
• Struggling to engage the hindquarters
• Becoming "grumpy" when being tacked up

These can all be signs that your horse isn't moving as comfortably as they could be.

Physiotherapy isn't just about rehabilitation after injury—it's also about maintaining performance, preventing problems and helping horses move efficiently.

Think of it as proactive healthcare rather than waiting until there's a bigger issue.
