🕯️ Wave of Light 2026 🕯️

At Langford Vets, we recognise that pregnancy and baby loss can affect colleagues, clients, friends and family, often in ways that are not visible. Over the past year, we have been working to raise awareness of pregnancy loss and develop a dedicated Pregnancy Loss Policy to ensure that anyone affected receives support, understanding and compassion when they need it most.

This evening, we will be joining the Wave of Light and taking a moment to remember all those babies gone too soon. 🤍

🐴Treatment and management

Addressing any endocrine issues through testing and treatment if required may be essential. Additional management may include:

• Mechanical supports to the foot and frog may be applied by your farrier
• Tailored diet to include poor quality hay (ideally soaked for 2-12 hours)
• restricted grass intake
Will all help to treat cases of laminitis.

A multimodal approach

Treating the condition is a process and it’s important to remember a multimodal approach including medication, management and farriery may all be required for the best outcome.

If your horse or pony has been diagnosed with laminitis, or you are concerned about possible signs, get in touch to arrange a visit and book an appointment with our team for support and treatment planning:

👥Managing Laminitis with your Vet and Farrier

🔨Working with y

We always seek to work alongside your farrier to help manage your horse or pony’s feet. They will typically be on your yard with a much higher frequency, and are best placed to spot:

• Expanding waistlines
• Increased digital pulses
• Changes in the hoof (e.g. divergent growth rings)

These might point towards an increasing risk of laminitis.

🩻The importance of x-rays

In most cases of laminitis, we recommend taking x-rays (radiographs) of the affected patients feet, in order to guide corrective trimming and farriery.

💉Blood tests and endocrine conditions

Blood tests can aid to establish endocrine conditions that may be contributing to laminitis in your horse or pony. Testing for Equine Metabolic Syndrome and Cushings may be suggested in order to get a better picture of contributing factors and how best to treat the condition.

Early intervention can make all the difference. Get in touch to arrange a visit and book an appointment with our veterinary team:

❓What causes laminitis?

There are multiple factors that can cause laminitis but can be broadly grouped into:

• Endocrine conditions
• Inflammatory processes in the foot due to high sugar/starch feeds
• Mechanical issues of the foot

🐎What is the role of exercise in prevention

Exercise is important for minimising the risk of laminitis. Where possible we recommend continuing to regularly exercise both horses and ponies, and if too small to be ridden, then walking in hand or lunging.

Exercise can help the body to process sugar properly, and reduce the build up of unnecessary fat stores.

🏡Why rest is crucial after diagnosis

Once laminitis is diagnosed it is very important to rest your horse strictly in a stable to minimise movement, as once laminitis has begun then exercise can exacerbate problems and risk further detachment between the pedal bone and the hoof.

The rain has arrived and with it the lush growth of grass. This means we have recently seen an increase in cases of laminitis.

❓What is laminitis?
Laminitis is a condition that can be all too common in spring and summer months but can affect patients at any time of year. The condition affects the structures (laminae) holding the hoof wall to the pedal bone in the foot, and in severe cases the pedal bone can sink or rotate under the pressures exerted through the foot.

🔎Early signs to look out for:

A typical presentation might be that owners notice their pony is more reluctant to walk in from the field, especially when they reach hard ground, and become short striding and “shuffle” particularly when turned.

Other signs of laminitis include:

• A strong bounding digital pulse in the foot
• Heat to the hoof wall
• Reluctance to pick up feet
• Changes in behaviour / temperament.
• Weight shifting between feet
• Rocking back on heels
• Pain on pressure from hoof testers are applied

If you notice any of these signs, get in touch to arrange a visit and book an appointment with our team for support and advice:
