ππΊGinger Cat Appreciation Day! πΊπ
πΎ Did you know that about 80% of ginger cats are male? The gene for ginger fur is located on the X chromosome of which males only have one. Females have to inherit the gene from both parents to be ginger, if they inherit from one and black from the other they will be born with tortoiseshell fur. (Interestingly only 1 in 3000 tortoiseshell cats are male and they have an extra chromosome XXY)
πΎGinger cats are striking, and so are often adopted quickly. Although there are some anecdotes that they are more outgoing than other coat colours or more prone to conditions such as blocked bladders or diabetes, there is little evidence for this and these differences may be explained due to the higher proportion of males in the group.
πΎWe would love to see photos of your orange cats, here are some of the Towcester Vets family past and present gingers!
