🌟😺Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 😺🌟

🐾 Did you know that about 80% of ginger cats are male? The gene for ginger fur is located on the X chromosome of which males only have one. Females have to inherit the gene from both parents to be ginger, if they inherit from one and black from the other they will be born with tortoiseshell fur. (Interestingly only 1 in 3000 tortoiseshell cats are male and they have an extra chromosome XXY)

🐾Ginger cats are striking, and so are often adopted quickly. Although there are some anecdotes that they are more outgoing than other coat colours or more prone to conditions such as blocked bladders or diabetes, there is little evidence for this and these differences may be explained due to the higher proportion of males in the group.

🎩 Top Tip Tuesday! 🎩

🍁 Harvest Mites 🍁

🐾 Harvest mites, Neotrombicula autumnalis, are tiny orange/red spider-like mites that are most active between August and October.

🐾 They cause intensely itchy bites which often result in a red rash.

🐾 The mites are often found around the paws of infected pets, but can also be found higher up limbs, in the armpit, on the abdomen or around the ears. We see them most commonly on dogs but they can also be found on cats, rabbits and people!

🐾 Harvest mites are most active in the warmest times of the day and are most commonly picked up in long grass or woodlands so avoiding those areas or walking at cooler times can help minimise the risks

🐾 The first sign of infection tends to be signs of itching such as paw chewing as discussed on Saturday, and being unsettled and irritated. Harvest mites are tiny but are visible to the naked eye and so infestations can often be diagnosed fairly easily.

🐾 There are no medications licensed against harvest mites, but many anti-parasitic medications licensed against fleas and other mites prove effective against them. If your pet is affected our vets will be happy to discuss the options with you.

🐾 As always, despite today being a bank holiday our staff are on hand to make sure any patients at our Towcester Hospital continue to receive excellent care and any pets requiring urgent help can be treated quickly.

🐾 If you need us urgently today, please call as normal and an option on the automated telephone system will allow you to be directed to the staff on duty.

🐾 Our thanks go today to vets Jen and Maddie and vet nurses Nicky, Caroline and Lucy who are sacrificing family time to be available for our patients.

🐶 Weedon receptionist Helen has a new addition and she is certain to make you puppy-broody!!

🐶 4 month old Boo is a Jack Russell x Poodle and has fitted in brilliantly! She is loving life exploring outdoors, digging, finding things she shouldn't to play with and playing with new big brother Al!

🐶 Senior big sister, 16 year old Pepper, watches her from afar, seeming to eye roll at the antics of annoying puppies!

🐶 All that play is exhausting though, and Boo often just falls into deep sleeps wherever she happens to be!

🤕🤢 Symptom Saturday! 🤒🤧

🐾 Chewing Feet 🐾

🐾 Most commonly seen in dogs, we frequently speak to owners about their pets chewing at their feet.

🐾 There can be a few different causes, but all tend to involve irritation and distress and so seeking veterinary attention and trying to determine the cause is important.

🐾 If the attention is restricted to just one paw it is worth a thorough examination to check for broken claws, wounds or interdigital swellings as discussed a few weeks ago.

🐾 If all paws seem to be irritating, atopy (skin allergies) or parasites such as harvest mites (see Tuesday's post) are a more likely cause.

🐾 Until you are able to get your pet seen by a vet, bathing the feet with salt water (1 teaspoon in 1 pint of cooled boiled water) can provide some relief.

🐾 It is important to try to prevent your pet licking and chewing themselves as they are likely to cause more trauma to the skin and increase the risk of infection and delayed healing. Using a lampshade-style collar or inflatable collar is often easiest, but some pets tolerate socks or boots better. Care needs to be taken with chewers however to avoid them eating the socks!

🐾 Today is International Dog Day, celebrating the role the world’s most popular pet has on our lives.

🐾 More than a third of UK homes own a dog, for a huge range of reasons, including companionship, support, working roles, security and hobby teammates.

🐾 At Towcester Vets we are here to support you through all stages of your and your pet’s journey together.

🐾 We can provide support and advice during the delivery of puppies, health checks and microchips as they grow, vaccinations, neutering, support as they work, compete, support their owners or enjoy pet life. We can help breeders with health checks and optimising success, help with new rescues and provide advice on nutrition, preventative health care and behaviour. We can support them through slowing down and aging, and at any stage provide care to injured or unwell pets. We can work with owners to provide palliative care in their final months, weeks and days and support their choices in providing a calm and dignified end when the time comes. We are here to help with grief and when the time is right, taking the first steps in their next pet journey.

🖤 Found Cat! 🖤

🐾 Sadly, we have had a deceased cat handed in to our Towcester Hospital after being found by the car park of the Olive Tree.

🐾 He is an all black, young, entire male with no collar or microchip.

🐾 Please call us on 01327 350239 if you believe he may be yours.

🐾 Please share to help get his owners some closure, thank you 💔
