This photo is what self-control, steadiness and good training can achieve. 🐶🐱

Until 48 hours ago, Dave had never properly met a cat. When we arrived for a house sit, he was interested, but he was told to “leave it.” He duly did as he was asked.

By controlling his instincts and giving the cat time and space, Dave allowed trust to develop. There was no chasing, no pressure and no opportunity for things to go wrong.

Now, just 48 hours later, they are relaxed together, have formed a friendship and will even play.

Teaching steadiness is not only useful in the shooting field. For gundog breeds living as pets, having an “off switch” for their natural predatory instincts is one of the most valuable life skills we can give them.

We are not trying to remove their instincts. We are teaching them when those instincts are appropriate and when they need to listen, show self-control and leave something alone.

This is how pet gundog training applies to everyday pet life ❤️

Dave was very happy to be drafted in for some dogging-in today!

He really is a good little all-rounder. Ask him to do something and he will give it 110%
The pheasant season isn’t too far away now!

We had a lovely return to training for Kay and Bertie today with them passing The Beginner Pet Gundog assessment 💜

Bertie is such a busy dog he can prove a challenge to keep focused. However, today proved this fabulous working cocker can switch on into work mode when needed.

He always brings the fun and now all of Kay’s efforts in building a bond with him, keeping him close and working with his working instincts gained lovely acknowledgment.

You should be very proud of yourselves, congratulations 💜🐾

A huge congratulations to Anita and the handsome Gus on passing their Beginner Pet Gundog Assessment! 🎉🏆

When Gus first joined training, he arrived full of enthusiasm… but that enthusiasm was often directed everywhere except where Anita needed it! Like many young gundogs, the world was far more exciting than his handler.

Fast forward to today, and we have built the foundations of a great owner and dog relationship.

Through consistent training, patience and understanding Gus has discovered a love for retrieving. Yes he can still get distracted, but more importantly, he has discovered the value of working with Anita rather than independently. Watching their partnership develop has been a real pleasure, and their relationship is now blossoming into exactly what pet gundog training is all about.

This assessment isn’t just about obedience or ticking boxes. It’s about building teamwork, trust and giving these wonderful breeds an outlet for the instincts they were born with.

Very well done, Anita. Your hard work has paid off, and Gus should be incredibly proud of himself too. Here’s to the next stage of your journey! 👏🐾💜

A Labrador doing what it says on the tin, retrieving!

There is something incredibly special about watching a Labrador do what generations of careful breeding have prepared them to do. Finding something, carrying gently, bringing it back and working in partnership with their handler isn’t a trick we’ve taught them – it’s part of who they are.

When we give Labradors the opportunity to exercise those natural retrieving instincts in a structured way, you can almost see the change in them. They switch on, their confidence grows and they work with such enthusiasm because they’re doing something that feels instinctively right.

Retrieving isn’t just about throwing a dummy. It’s about teamwork. It’s about communication, trust and cooperation. Every successful retrieve builds your value to your dog because you become part of the game they were born to love. You become the person who provides purpose, direction and the opportunity to fulfil those innate drives.

Rather than trying to suppress what your Labrador was bred to do, embrace it. Give them an appropriate outlet and watch your relationship flourish. A fulfilled dog is often a happier, calmer dog, and there’s nothing quite like seeing a Labrador proudly carrying a retrieve back with that unmistakable look of joy on their face.

Barney blooper- having fun training a dog is a must. Being too serious or getting frustrated will flatten the desire your dog has to work with you.
So here we have lovely Barney, who is making great progress in his training and is learning to love retrieving….and that is a pairs exercise! He used to pick up and run away.
We can polish every part of this up later as we progress but for now he is having a great time and practicing all the good stuff. ❤️🐾

Finally made it back on the training field this morning 🎉

I met beautiful Baska for his first lesson and he is a fantastic busy little chap.
Loves to hunt.
Loves to retrieve.
Loves food and play.

We will have some good fun with him.

I had an unsettled, very hot dog, pacing and panting.
Took him outside for a thorough soaking, a quick towel off and now snoozing in front of a fan.
It’s a real struggle for the dogs in this weather. It’s hotter than satan’s arm pit! 🌞🥵
