📢 Out of Office – 9th–14th June 📢

The dogs may be enjoying their woodland adventures today, but from tomorrow my muddy boots and training leads will be used alongside notebooks and workbooks!

From 9th–14th June, All Avenues Dog Training is closed for training while I head off to Scotland to attend a week of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

I’ll be spending time alongside fellow Accredited Pet Gundog Instructors, sharing knowledge, developing skills, and ensuring I continue to provide the very best training and support for both dogs and their owners.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, I’ll also be attending the Level 5 Canine Behaviour Practitioner Diploma Workshop, further expanding my understanding of canine behaviour and welfare.

As dog trainers, our education never stops. The more we learn, the more we can help our clients navigate the challenges of dog ownership and build stronger, more rewarding relationships with their dogs.

Messages and enquiries may take a little longer than usual to respond to during this period, but I’ll get back to everyone as soon as possible.

Exciting times ahead, and I can’t wait to bring all this new knowledge back to my clients and their dogs!

The HPRs were bringing it home in the prompt recall today. Love seeing these dogs get some strides in but also loving the faith these ladies had in both their dogs braking abilities as well as their own knees! Great work 👏🏻

Train the Dog in Front of You

One of the biggest challenges in dog training is remembering that every dog is an individual. While breed tendencies can give us a rough guide, dogs don’t read the textbooks. Some mature quickly, some take much longer, and some will keep you humble every step of the way.

Dug has recently taken a bit of a backward step in his training. Rather than continuing to push forward and expecting progress that simply isn’t there yet, we’ve adjusted our approach.

For Dug, it’s back to basics.

No leeway on boundaries. Clear structure. Consistent leadership. This is a dog who needs black and white, not shades of grey. He needs as few decisions as possible in his day-to-day life, with his owners taking responsibility for setting clear expectations and maintaining them.

When a dog is struggling, the answer isn’t always to keep adding more. Often it’s the opposite. Strip everything back to the foundations. Focus on successful obedience drills, engagement through play, and most importantly, insist on good manners in everyday situations.

The good news? Dug responded brilliantly in his lesson today. Seeing him succeed was a huge confidence boost not only for him, but for his owners too. Sometimes the most important progress comes from recognising where a dog is right now and meeting them there.

Train the dog in front of you, not the dog you think he should be, or the dog others think he is capable of being.

Success comes from working with the individual, not the expectation. 🐾💙

Congratulations to gorgeous little Flo and her owner Callum on achieving The Novice Pet Gundog Assessment today! 🐾👏

Flo has gone from chasing birds and pulling on the lead to becoming a star student who has taken to Pet Gundog training like a duck to water. She absolutely loves her training, and I’ve loved watching her progress so far.

Very well done, Team Flo! 🌟

No training today but met up with a couple of the girls for a 7am dog walk.
Coffee, chatter and happy tired dogs, all before the heat arrived.

Q. How can I get the best results out of my dog training and how can you help me?-

Dog training is not about keeping people comfortable. It’s about creating lasting results for both dog and handler.

I am not the kind of trainer who will take your money for years while you stay stuck in the same cycle, just to protect your feelings or ego. My goal is progress. The kind that changes everyday life with your dog.

I will have straight conversations and share my opinions with you- with the aim of helping you.

Every dog and every handler is an individual, and good training reflects that. But the people who get the best results all have a few things in common:

They can honestly self-reflect.
They can take instruction and constructive critique without becoming defensive.
They go home and put the work in.
They change the way they live and interact with their dog outside of training sessions.

The people who struggle are usually the ones who turn up once every couple of weeks, minimal practice between, allow the dog to keep rehearsing the behaviours we are trying to change, and then wonder why nothing improves.

Training doesn’t happen once a fortnight in a field. It happens every single day in the home, on walks, in routines, boundaries, consistency, and handling.

Dog training is a journey of self-awareness, emotional control, consistency, and understanding what a dog actually is — not what we emotionally want them to be.

But if you are willing to embrace that process, I will be your biggest cheerleader. I will support you, guide you, and help you every step of the way.

No dog trainer, no dog, and no handler is perfect. There will be peaks and there will be troughs. There will be breakthroughs, frustrations, setbacks, and wins. That is all part of the journey.

I will celebrate your successes with you, and I will stand beside you through the difficult parts too — with empathy, understanding and without judgment.

If you are willing to be honest, consistent, and committed, the results can be life-changing and I’m here for it!

Your efforts will be seen and matched by my own desire to see you succeed. ❤️👏🏻

Hard to believe as the temps over the past couple of days have been a bit chilly but temperatures are due to climb….a lot!

If you are booked on to a class over the weekend there is a possibility it is going to be way too hot. I will contact everyone should the need arise to postpone.
Dog welfare comes first.

⭐️Dogs and adolescence⭐️

This period in dog ownership can be so frustrating. You feel like your training has hit a wall. What you thought was a lovely new trained skill, now appears to be long forgotten.
All your efforts and successes thus far are no longer in evidence. Simple tasks like sit, stay and recall have disappeared.
The engagement you enjoyed with your dog is now zero.
Dogs are now making their own decisions, testing you, behaving in pushy and sometimes outrageously rude ways and absolutely anything and everything out in the environment is more interesting than you!

This can be exactly the time when some owners tap out, decide they can’t cope with these behaviours and find they just don’t have the time to train through it. It is the period in a dogs life when it is most likely to be given up on and rehomed. It is such a common story and one that should not happen.

Reach out for help, go back to your real basics in training, all that puppy stuff- yep, do it all again!
Make training simple and successful- this will make both you and your dog happy and allow for both of you to enjoy your training. Advanced stuff is very likely to be off the menu right now. The dogs brain cannot cope and if you carry on trying it will end up in frustration and conflict.

Your dog will come out of the other side, the training you achieved has not been forgotten. It will come back.

We just need to be consistent, confident and most importantly calm.
Adolescence is definitely a reason why things go wrong for a while but it is not an excuse to let your dog get away with unacceptable behaviour. Manners must be insisted on, training must have success and our leadership and boundaries hold firm.

These two boys are going through it and we took training right back to the very beginning today, both went home tired and happy. When their brains were engaged they were fabulous- it could be fleeting but it was there! 👏🏻🐾
