IMPORTANT - Classes cancelled this evening

After careful consideration, I’ve made the decision to cancel this evening’s classes due to the extreme heat. The forecast is still showing 26–27°C at class time. Although the hall stays relatively cool, we also need to factor in travelling to and from the venue, as well as the natural arousal and excitement the dogs experience during class, all of which place extra strain on their breathing.

Your dogs’ safety and welfare are my absolute priority. I’d much rather err on the side of caution than take any unnecessary risks - no dog has ever suffered from missing a walk, but too much exposure to this level of heat can be dangerous, especially for longer haired and brachycephalic breeds, some of which attend this evening's classes.

This means the final class of the course will now take place on Tuesday 9th June 2026. Emails have been sent to confirm this and if this date is a problem and you’re unable to attend, I can offer you a space on one of the next available courses to complete your final session.

This will also impact the start date of the next courses; emails will be going out today to people booked onto these to advise of the changes and confirm attendance.

Stay cool and stay safe, Juanita 🐾🩵

🌞 HOT WEATHER & OUR DOGS - KEEPING THEM SAFE, COOL & COMFORTABLE🌞

With temperatures climbing this weekend, it’s time for a gentle reminder that our dogs feel the heat long before we do. Heatstroke can develop fast, even on days that don’t feel “that hot” to us. Here are some simple, safe ways to help your dog stay cool this weekend and summer:

❄️Cooling Activities That Are Safe and Enriching
- Cooling mats - fabric‑based ones are generally safer than gel‑filled versions, which can be punctured or ingested.
- Freezable toys - fill with water and freeze for a fun, cooling chew.
- Frozen treats - freeze bone broth, dog‑safe fruits or use silicone moulds for easy portioning.
- Paddling pool games - bobbing for toys, gentle splashing or simply standing in the water can help regulate temperature.
- Frozen Toppls and lick mats - great for mental enrichment while helping your dog cool down.

⚠️ Cooling Coats vs Cooling Bandanas
- Cooling coats can trap heat if used incorrectly or once they dry out, making dogs hotter rather than cooler.
- Cooling bandanas are often a safer alternative - lighter, easier to re-wet and less likely to cause overheating.

🌡️Ground Temperature Matters
- Use the 5‑second rule: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for paws.
- Don’t forget artificial grass - it can become scorching very quickly.

🏡 Keeping Dogs Comfortable at Home
- Close blinds/curtains during the hottest parts of the day.
- Use fans indoors to keep air moving (never point directly at a dog who can’t move away).
- Create shady garden spots using umbrellas or natural shade.
- Offer multiple cool resting areas so your dog can choose where they feel most comfortable.

🩵 A Final Reminder
Walks can wait. Play can be adapted. Comfort and safety always come first. If in doubt, skip the walk and focus on enrichment, training games or a frozen lick mat/Kong/Toppl indoors.

Stay safe, stay cool and have fun! 🩵🐾

🐾 About the Gold Continuation Classes

These ongoing 6‑week rolling courses take your dog’s scent work skills even further. You’ll work through the UK Sniffer Dogs Bronze, Silver and Gold continuation grades, developing precision, independence and confidence.

We’ll be covering a wide range of exercises, including:

• Indication duration
• Negative hides
• Inaccessible hides
• Indication distance
• Noise distractions
• Novel area, bag, chair, vehicle, person, water and active searches
• Buried hides
• Themed mini trials

We’ll also be working with the UK Sniffer Dogs scent library: Kong, gun oil, cat nip and English truffle oil.

Your dog must have already completed the UK Sniffer Dogs Gold course to attend these classes.

📘 How the Grading Works

• Each level (Bronze, Silver, Gold) has 6 sub‑grades, each with 10 criteria
• You can work on all criteria simultaneously
• Every handler receives a grade book stamped as criteria are achieved
• Certificates are awarded for each completed sub‑grade
• Special awards are given for completing all criteria across each full level

🏫 Class Format

• 50‑minute classes
• Held both indoors and outdoors at Clanfield Memorial Hall
• Run in 6‑week rolling blocks
• Once you book a place, it’s yours for as long as you continue attending
• If you choose not to continue, your space is offered to the waiting list and you will have to wait for a space to become free to re-join
• If you return later, your previous progress is carried forward

💷 Course Fees

• £90 for the first 6‑week block (includes your continuation grade workbook)
• £80 for each subsequent 6‑week block
