As dog groomers, we usually show the best bits - the flawless finish, the perfect angles, and the dogs who breeze through their appointments with zero nerves. But the reality of dog grooming is so much deeper than that.
Not every furry client finds grooming easy. For pups like 11 year old Shearer, who had never been professionally groomed before, it takes time, patience, and a lot of reassurance to build trust.
She went home a little damp in the areas she wouldn't tolerate the dryer (not a bad thing with the current weather), and her groom wasn't "perfect”. To expect her to cope with every single step on her first visit would have been unrealistic and, honestly cruel. I stopped filming right after these clips to focus 100% on keeping her calm.
She went home unfinished, but this was a highly successful groom. Why? Because she left happy, comfortable, and knowing she was safe. The mountain of loose undercoat we got out of her was just a bonus!
To my clients, thank you for trusting me with your fur babies, especially the nervous ones. Your dog's comfort will always come before a photo opportunity.
Well done Shearer, you were a super brave girl and I absolutely loved meeting you ♥️
