Senior Groom – Riding School & Stud

Location: Waterbeach
Reporting to: Yard Manager / Proprietor
Hours: Full-time including one day at the weekend
Salary: dependent on experience

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced, capable and responsible Senior Groom to join our riding school and stud team.

This is a hands-on role for someone who has excellent horse-care knowledge, high standards and the confidence to take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the yard when required. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with a range of horses, including riding school horses, youngstock, broodmares and competition or stud horses.

The role combines high-quality horse care, yard management, staff supervision and support with the riding school and stud operations.

Key Responsibilities

Horse Care

• Carry out and oversee the daily care and welfare of all horses.
• Muck out, (not a daily task) feed, turn out and bring in horses to a high standard.
• Prepare and administer feeds, supplements and medication as required.
• Maintain clean, safe and well-presented stables and horse areas.
• Monitor horses closely and identify any changes in health, behaviour or condition.
• Handle horses confidently and appropriately, including young or less experienced horses.
• Assist with routine veterinary, farrier, dentist and other professional appointments.
• Maintain accurate records of horse care, medication, treatments and health concerns.

Riding School

• Help prepare horses and ponies for lessons and activities.
• Ensure horses are appropriately matched to riders and workloads.
• Assist instructors with the smooth running of lessons and riding school activities.
• Maintain tack and equipment to a high standard.
• Ensure horses receive appropriate rest, exercise and workload management.
• Support the safe and professional presentation of the riding school.

Yard Management & Team Leadership

• Take responsibility for the smooth running of the yard when the Yard Manager is absent.
• Supervise and support junior and other yard staff.
• Allocate daily tasks and ensure work is completed efficiently.
• Lead by example and maintain consistently high standards of horse care.
• Monitor stocks of hay, bedding, feed and other yard supplies and report when replenishment is required.
• Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
• Follow and help enforce yard procedures, health and safety requirements and emergency protocols.

Skills & Experience

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• Significant professional experience working with horses.
• Strong practical knowledge of horse care and welfare.
• Experience within a riding school, stud, professional yard or similar environment.
• Experience handling a variety of horses, including youngstock.
• Good knowledge of feeding, turnout, stable management and routine horse health.
• The confidence to recognise and report health or welfare concerns.
• Good organisational and communication skills.
• The ability to work independently and use initiative.
• Experience supervising or supporting other members of staff.
• A calm, patient and professional approach to horses and people.
• A strong work ethic and willingness to get involved in all aspects of yard work.

Relevant equestrian qualifications, such as BHS qualifications, are desirable but practical experience, competence and attitude are equally important.

Personal Qualities

We are looking for someone who is:

• Reliable and conscientious.
• Calm and confident around horses.
• Kind and welfare-focused.
• Organised and proactive.
• A good team player.
• Able to communicate clearly with colleagues, clients, instructors and professionals.
• Comfortable taking responsibility and making decisions within their role.
• Keen to maintain high standards rather than simply complete tasks.

Working Environment

This is a varied role within a busy riding school and stud, so flexibility is essential. The successful candidate must be prepared for early starts, weekend and bank holiday duties as part of the normal rota, and the physical nature of professional yard work.

Above all, we are looking for someone who takes pride in excellent horse care, good stable management and creating a safe, positive and professional environment for both horses and people.

To Apply

Please send a CV and brief covering letter outlining your experience with horses, riding schools and/or stud work, together with details of your relevant qualifications and references.

🔥Hot 🔥Weather Guidance for ABRS+ Members
Ben Mayes, Equine Welfare Officer for the Pony Club and the ABRS+, has asked us to share the following guidance with members as temperatures rise across the UK.

ABRS+ urges all members to place horse welfare first during periods of hot weather.

While national organisations provide valuable guidance for competitions and events, riding schools and training centres often work with horses and riders of varying fitness, experience and age. Members should therefore adopt a cautious approach and modify or suspend activities where conditions may compromise welfare.

Particular attention should be paid to hydration, shade provision, lesson duration, cooling procedures and monitoring horses for signs of heat stress.

Horse welfare must always take precedence over commercial, training or competitive objectives.

Thank you to Ben Mayes for highlighting the importance of sharing this guidance and supporting members in promoting the highest standards of equine welfare during periods of extreme weather.
