We are expanding… 👀

From October, Beth will be offering in home pet sitting around Washington, Sunderland and surrounding areas through Mutts and Me 🐶

Rather than your dog having to go into kennels or stay somewhere unfamiliar, Beth comes to you and stays in your home, keeping their normal routine, walks, feeding and everything else as close to normal as possible while you’re away.

Perfect for dogs who are nervous, reactive, older, have specific routines, or simply much happier in their own home.

She’ll also be working alongside Matts Mutts, so if your dog already has training and boundaries in place, these can actually be maintained while you’re away rather than you coming home to everything having gone out the window 😂.

Most of my consultation calls start the same way, someone who already tried another trainer, spent real money, and ended up back at square one.

Almost every time, it comes back to one of these five. A quick fix that didn’t hold. A method they weren’t allowed to question. Nobody they could actually speak to before booking.

One year ago yesterday, I took the biggest risk of my life and left engineering to become a full-time dog trainer.

12 months later, I can safely say I’d do it all again.

To every single client who has trusted me with their dog, every dog I’ve had the privilege of working with, and everyone who has supported Matts Mutts along the way, thank you. I genuinely couldn’t have done any of this without you.

And of course, none of it would have happened without Fraiser. The little dog who completely changed the direction of my life and somehow turned a passion into a career.

I genuinely believe I have the best job in the world. I get to spend my days outdoors, working with dogs, meeting brilliant people and doing something I absolutely love.

They say, “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Turns out they were right.

One year self-employed. Here’s to year two.🍾

Getting a second dog won’t fix the problems you’re having with the first.

In fact, you might just end up with two dogs displaying the same behaviours, while having half the time to work on them.

I’m not saying reactive dogs can’t live with other dogs. They absolutely can.

But another dog shouldn’t be the solution, fix your first one so they can be a role model for your second.

Had a client ask me recently why their dog “knows sit perfectly” but still loses the plot the second another dog appears.

Commands are something a dog performs. They don’t tell you anything about what he does with himself when nobody’s asking anything of him, which is most of a walk, most of the time.

That’s the bit I actually spend sessions building.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words what this dog has done for me.

We got Fraiser because we wanted a dog. That was it.

I had no plans of becoming a dog trainer. No plans of building a business around dogs. And definitely no idea that this little Spaniel would completely change the direction of my life.

When his reactivity started, all I wanted was to help him. I wanted to understand what was going on in his head and give him the best life I possibly could.

That sent me down a rabbit hole that eventually became an obsession.

But Fraiser taught me far more than just how to train dogs.

He taught me a different way to think and a different way to feel. He taught me what it meant to have something completely rely on me showing up for him every single day.

And in return, he’s given me a level of loyalty and unconditional love that’s incredibly difficult to explain unless you’ve had that dog.

Because of him, I found a passion I genuinely didn’t know existed.

I left a career I’d spent over a decade in. I built Matt’s Mutts. I’ve helped owners who were in the exact position I once found myself in. And Fraiser has been there through all of it, helping those dogs alongside me.

The funny thing is, I thought I was the one who was supposed to change his life.

Turns out he completely changed mine.

And if I could trade a few years of mine just to have a few more with him one day, I genuinely would. ❤️🐾

Reactivity isn’t one thing. Most people treat it like it is, which is exactly why generic advice keeps failing.

There are three main drivers.
Fear-based — he wants distance, not confrontation.

Frustration-based — he wants to get closer and physically can’t, and that boils over.

Over-arousal — nothing’s dangerous, it’s just all too much, all at once.

Same bark. Same lunge. Completely different dog, completely different reason, completely different fix.

There’s a big difference between a dog that usually comes back and a dog you genuinely trust off lead.

If you’re unclipping that lead and just hoping today isn’t the day they spot something more interesting than you… you’re gambling.

Reliable recall isn’t built by shouting louder, carrying better treats or crossing your fingers every time another dog appears.

It’s built through consistency, engagement and making sure that ignoring you doesn’t become something your dog gets to practise over and over again.

Because ultimately, getting your dog off lead shouldn’t feel like taking a risk.

It should feel like freedom.
