✂️ Has the clipping season started at your yard yet? 🐴

With the evenings drawing in and autumn just around the corner, some horses are already starting to grow their winter coats… while others are still enjoying their summer look! 🍂

But when is the right time to clip? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on your horse’s coat, workload, how much they sweat, and how much time they spend turned out.

As a general guide, early September can be a little early for a full clip, particularly for horses that live out. Many horses will be ready for their first clip later in September or October as their winter coat comes through and their workload increases.

If your horse is getting sweaty during work and struggling to dry, a small or trace clip can be a good starting point. For horses in harder work, a larger clip may be more suitable as the weather gets colder.

And remember… once that coat comes off, you’ll need to think about appropriate rugs, shelter and keeping your horse warm and comfortable. 🧥🐴

So, tell us… have you clipped yet, or are you firmly in the “leave the fluff alone for now” camp? 😂✂️

🌱 It's great that the grass is finally growing… but keep a close eye on your laminitis-prone horses and ponies! 🐴

After the recent rainfall, the grass is really starting to grow again following the long dry spell and that fresh, lush growth can be particularly risky for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.

Now is a good time to think about reducing grass intake with measures such as a grazing muzzle, restricted turnout or a track system, alongside plenty of appropriate exercise. Keeping weight under control, providing plenty of forage and avoiding sudden changes to their diet can also help reduce the risk.

Remember, prevention is better than cure when it comes to laminitis. If you're concerned about your horse or pony, speak to your vet or an equine nutritionist for advice tailored to their individual needs. 💚🐴
