Last week, we lost our beautiful, vibrant Finn Boy. He was only 3 years old 💔

Finn was taken from us following sudden, devastating post-operative complications after surgery for a blockage.
Our hearts are completely broken. It feels incredibly unjust.

You all know that our dogs are so much more than “just a dog”; he was my dad’s shadow, his sidekick, his therapy, and his whole world in retirement.

If you’d ever met Finn, or heard me chatting about him during one of our training sessions, then you’ll know he was larger than life. He lived life at 100mph (quite literally, everything he did was at triple speed 😂), and brought pure joy to everyone he met.
He brought so many people together, helped bring other dogs out of their shells, and even brought tons of new business my way, just by being the beautiful soul that he was! 😢

He had an incredible life with my dad, and they were both so lucky to have found each other 🐾

Finn, you were taken far too soon. I hope you’re wreaking as much havoc up there as you did down here 😂 We love you 🌈🕊️

Our next Calm Dog Workshop is coming up on Saturday 26th September 10am 🐶

Adolescence is tough. If your junior dog has suddenly forgotten all their foundation training, please know you are not alone!

It’s A Dog’s Life and myself are running this workshop once a month to provide trainer-led socialisation and behaviour support for junior dogs. It is specifically designed to give both you and your dog a little extra guidance through that tricky teenage phase.

We will be working on building focus, encouraging neutrality around other dogs, and managing those big teenage emotions in a safe, controlled environment.

🗓 When: Saturday 26th September at 10AM 📍
Where: It’s A Dog’s Life, St Helens, WA9 5AE
* further dates are available to book between now and December 2026.

UPDATE: I’m absolutely fine 🤣 these are injuries from over a 7 year period!!

Dog training isn’t always puppies, fun recall games and lead training 😂

I’ve never shared my work injuries before because I never, ever want the dog guardians of those dogs to feel bad or guilty. For context, I’ve only ever had two bad bites in almost 10 years of doing this job (I don’t have pictures of those as I was otherwise engaged 😅).

But I’m sharing this today because I want to highlight something really important: even us pros get it wrong sometimes.

I see it so often with dedicated dog guardians, too. It is incredibly frustrating when you’ve been practising training for weeks, only for your dog to get it completely ‘wrong’ when you’re out on a walk.
When things go wrong, whether you get hurt, scared, or just feel embarrassed in public, it is completely human nature to get annoyed and want to blame the dog for lashing out or “getting it wrong.”

But as dog trainers and guardians, we have to shift that mindset.
Instead of jumping straight to blaming the dog, we should be thinking: “Ah, we put them in the wrong situation there, what can we change for next time so it doesn’t happen again?”

Dogs are just communicating and reacting to the environment and the pressure we put them under. As their teachers, the onus is entirely on us to manage that. If they are failing, we need to change the lesson plan, adjust the environment, or simply give them more space.

It’s a hard pill to swallow sometimes, especially when you’re nursing a bite or just feeling utterly defeated after a tough walk, but taking that responsibility is the only way we can truly support and understand our dogs we love 💛

If you are currently struggling with your dog, please know that you aren’t alone and you don’t have to navigate it by yourself. Send me a direct message, and let’s chat about how we can support both of you ❤️‍🩹🐕

BIG UPDATE ‼️ Positive Steps is relocating to Ainsdale! 🌊

Living by the coast has always been the goal, throughout Harley’s almost 9 years, we’ve spent so many days at the beach (as you will have seen).

Harley’s recent health scare and her ongoing autoimmune flare-ups made me realise there’s no point waiting for the “perfect” time. I want her to be able to enjoy the beach whilst she still can, and have the best possible quality of life right now, so we’ve brought the move forward 🏡 Our new place is literally just a few hundred metres walk from the beach 🥹

For my current clients in Warrington, St Helens, and the surrounding areas: please don’t worry, absolutely nothing is changing for you. Positive Steps is still operating normally in your area. My working hours, your sessions, and my availability for future bookings remain exactly the same. It is completely business as usual 💛

To anyone local to Ainsdale and Southport: once we’re unpacked and settled, I’ll be taking on new clients over this way. If you or any dog guardians you know are looking for compassionate training, keep an eye out. I’ll be opening up my books for local sessions soon!

Thank you all so much for your ongoing support and for being so understanding while I prioritise Harley 🤍
