With the increasing number of wildfires across the country, we wanted to provide some advice for
looking after your pets when your home is affected by smoke and heat from a wildfire.
If your area is affected by smoke and heat from a wildfire:
✅Keep all pets indoors so far as is possible, and keep the windows shut

✅Keep trips outside to allow dogs to go to the toilet brief

✅After trips outside, clean your pet’s coat using a damp cloth, brush their fur and wipe their
paws to remove smoke particles and ash that could be licked off and be potentially toxic

✅Birds, small animals and reptiles are particularly susceptible to the impacts of smoke and heat
and should not be allowed outside

✅If feeding your pet plants and greens from your garden, thoroughly wash and dry them before
feeding to ensure smoke particles are removed
Make sure fresh water is always available

✅Reduce other sources of indoor air pollution – avoid smoking or va**ng indoors, or burning
candles, as this will further worsen the air quality
Avoid exercising pets outside unless you can drive them into an unaffected area

✅Have a plan ready in case you need to evacuate your home

Pets that may be at greater risk of being affected by smoke and heat include old and very young
animals, overweight animals, flat-faced breeds of dog, cat and rabbit, pets with heart or lung
diseases, and pregnant pets.
If your pet is showing signs that they are being affected by smoke or heat, please contact the
practice on 01925 912474
If your pet is struggling to breathe, is collapsed, or their symptoms getting worse , contact us
immediately on 01925 912474.

🐾🦤 WELL… THAT WASN’T ON THE JOB DESCRIPTION! 😂 🦤🐾

We had the most bizarre conversation with a passerby earlier this week…

“Excuse me… there’s a loose EMU wandering around a field near the railway station.” 👀

As we’re generally used to dealing with slightly smaller animals, we weren’t quite sure what to expect! 😂

Sure enough… on arrival, there was ACTUALLY AN EMU casually wandering around the field! 🦤🤯

After getting permission from the station, we set to work making an opening in the fence so we could get to our new feathered friend — who we later discovered is called Vivian! ❤️

And how did we attempt to persuade an Emu to come home?

By playing Emu noises from a phone, of course! 😂📱🦤

The owners’ friends soon arrived to lend a hand, and once we’d gained access to the field, we left them to safely es**rt Vivian back home. 🥰

But naturally… the story didn’t end there! 🤭

We decided to have a little fun with our colleagues and used AI to create a picture of an EMU being walked back to our kennels….. before telling them Vivian was staying overnight! 😂😂😂

And honestly… THEY FELL FOR IT HOOK, LINE AND SINKER! 🤣🦤

Safe to say, they found it very funny!

Moral of the story: even when you’re working hard, you can still have a bit of fun along the way! 🙌🏽😂

And apparently, we’re now qualified in Emu retrieval, Emu communication AND advanced workplace pranking. 🤣🦤🏆

What a week! 😂❤️

🚨🦔 URGENT PLEA FOR OUR HEDGEHOGS! 🦔🚨

Birchwood Hedgehog Rescue is running desperately low on some of the essentials we need to keep our prickly residents happy, healthy and well fed. ❤️

📣 WE ARE CURRENTLY APPEALING FOR:

📰 OLD NEWSPAPER – clean, unwanted newspapers are hugely useful around the rescue.

🥩 ALDI’S OWN BRAND WET & DRY CAT FOOD – MEAT FLAVOURS ONLY, PLEASE — NO FISH! 🐶🦔
This is something they rely on to help feed our hedgehogs, so any donations would be very gratefully received.

☀️ AND PLEASE, PLEASE HELP OUR WILDLIFE IN THIS HOT WEATHER!

If you have hedgehogs visiting your garden, PUT OUT FRESH WATER AND FOOD EVERY DAY. 💧🍖

💡 TOP TIP: If your water bowls are deep, pop a few clean stones in the bottom. This helps weigh the bowl down and gives little visitors somewhere safe to perch.

🐝 The stones can also make brilliant little landing spots for bees and other insects who need a drink without risking falling into the water!

🦔💦 A bowl of fresh water could make all the difference to a thirsty hedgehog.

Please SHARE, SHARE, SHARE! 📢
If you can donate newspaper or Aldi’s own-brand meat dog food, please get in touch with Birchwood Hedgehog Rescue or drop off here at Birchwood Vets WA3 7PG 🐾

Every tin, bag and bundle of newspaper helps us care for these amazing little creatures. 🥰🦔

THANK YOU for helping us look after our prickly friends! ❤️

🦔💚

Today we say a fond farewell to our wonderful student nurse, Freya, who has been part of our team for the past 12 months on placement. 💚

Over the last year, Freya has gone above and beyond in everything she has done, consistently exceeding expectations and becoming a valued member of our practice family. We are incredibly proud to announce that she has successfully completed 100% of her NPL student training. 🤩🥳

Freya, it has been an absolute pleasure watching you grow in confidence, knowledge, and skill. Your compassion for our patients, kindness towards our clients, and dedication to your training have shone through every day. We have no doubt that you will make an outstanding Veterinary Nurse when you qualify. 🐶🐱🐰🐭

While we’re excited to see what the future holds for you, saying goodbye won’t be easy. We know our clients and patients will miss your friendly face just as much as we will. 🥰

From all of us at Birchwood Vets, thank you for everything you’ve brought to the team. We wish you every success, happiness, and opportunity in your future career—you truly deserve it. Good luck, Freya, and don’t forget to come back and visit us! 💚✨ xx

🦔🦔🦔 Today we had the pleasure of treating not one, not two… but THREE hedgehogs!

All three needed some extra TLC and fluids due to dehydration 💧❤️

If you spot a hedgehog out in the daytime, here’s what to do:
📞 Contact your local hedgehog rescue (locally, Birchwood Hedgehog Rescue)
📦 Place them in a secure container
🔥 Provide warmth — a hot water bottle or warm water bottle works well (making sure they can move away safely)
🏥 Bring them to your local vet for treatment — and please call ahead so we’re ready to welcome our prickly patients!

Together, we can help keep these little visitors safe 🦔✨
