When we brought our first baby home, Bertie was 3 years old & had never been around babies before.
We’d done all the prep — baby noises, smells, & desensitisation exercises.
Even so, he looked at this tiny, noisy human like we’d brought home an alien 👶😂
His first reaction wasn’t instant love.
He kept his distance and seemed unsure, which is something I wish more people talked about. Dogs don’t always instantly love babies, and that’s okay.
Instead of forcing interactions, we gave him time to adjust.
After a few days, he started choosing to be close by. He’d lie next to the baby and quietly keep watch 💛
That gradual change taught me a lot.
Preparation matters. Supervision matters. Patience matters. And understanding your dog’s body language makes all the difference.
If you’re preparing your dog for a new baby, you’re not alone.
It’s a journey, and it’s something I now love helping other families navigate too 🐾
