I had a follow up with this girl yesterday here are what her owners have noticed since my last visit:

•less demand barking
•she’s calmer in the house
•no charging at the fence
•less excitement when guests arrive

And the biggest change has been in her lead walking, she’s able to be more focused on her owner and can walk past triggers that would normally make her lunge. All through making consistent changes.

Great work!

Meep knows a lot of obedience exercises and can do soo many tricks and he can look perfectly trained however he is not an emotionally balanced dog.

Training teaches him what to do. Emotional balance teaches him how to feel and cope.

True training isn’t just about a dog that listens it’s about helping them feel safe, confident, resilient, and able to navigate the world around them. 🐾❤️

A well trained dog and emotionally healthy dog aren’t always the same thing.

Just keep SNIFFING!

The hounds had breakfast in the garden this morning, they are an older pair so struggle with long walks but that doesn’t mean their noses have stopped working.

Listen to that sound, putting their heritage to work by searching for the goods using their ears to hone in on the scent.

When pet sitting I do like to give your pets extra enrichment so they enjoy my stay.

“Is that an about turn”

Following on from yesterday’s post, i’m playing dogs with Dorset Dog Training and she questions my turns . Get yourself a friend that you can train with and have a laugh, there will never be a dull day 😂

Something I’ve been thinking a lot about since starting this journey…

It’s ok to ask for help as a trainer/behaviourist. It can be a lonely place when you first start out, you won’t have all the answers and may doubt whether it’s the right career path however I’m also learning that experience doesn’t happen overnight and not having endless cases doesn’t mean I’m not capable of becoming a good behaviourist.

There can be a lot of pressure in this industry, none of us start out knowing everything, and even the most experienced trainers will come across cases where they want another perspective. Find yourself a mentor or a group of people you can talk to and learn from.

After all “There’s more than one way to skin a cat” or dog in this case 😂

It’s Monday and back to school for kids.

You may find your dogs struggle to get back into the routine of life just as much as your kids getting back into the routine of going to school again.

Both I’m sure have had a fun filled summer holidays and boundaries may have “gone by the wayside”, you slept in longer maybe took the dogs out later in the day. It won’t take long before they are back on track.

Don’t panic, however if you do need some help or a bit of guidance get in touch!

THE “BER” MONTHS

As the nights start drawing in the walks are being done in darkness, morning and night but what better way to spend them by listening to an audiobook.

In training and behaviour we mention being consistent in everything we teach to improve lots of problem behaviours.

Consistency works for everything including grooming. Meep hasn’t had a groom in a while and it showed in how he dealt with the process, being a general fidget so when your groomer or trainer says to book in for a groom sooner or do more lead walking they are only saying it to help you and your groomer.

Ft Meep with his new “nearly” Bedlington look.
