This is something every horse owner should know about, because a broken saddle tree can cause serious problems if it goes unnoticed!
I recently visited a customer who had noticed that her saddle wasnโt sitting correctly and was experiencing quite a bit of movement. Rather than simply making adjustments and hoping for the best, I decided we needed to investigate further.
With my customerโs agreement, I stripped the saddle down there and then, on-site, so we could see exactly what was going on.

The tree is the internal structure of the saddle. It plays a vital role in supporting the saddleโs shape, distributing weight and providing a stable foundation for both horse and rider.
When a tree is damaged, the saddle can become unstable, move excessively and potentially create uneven pressure points. This can lead to discomfort, soreness and other problems for your horse and rider.

If a saddle isnโt sitting correctly or is moving more than it should, itโs important to find out why rather than simply adjusting the flocking or trying to make it fit.
And this brings me to something worth asking when choosing your saddle fitterโฆ
Would your saddle fitter be comfortable stripping a saddle down on-site if they suspected something more serious was going on?
Iโm confident carrying out this type of investigation when itโs appropriate, with the customerโs permission, because I believe itโs so important to get to the bottom of a problem rather than just treat the symptoms.
A saddle can look perfectly fine on the outside, but that doesnโt always tell the whole story. Sometimes you need to look beneath the leather to understand whatโs really happening.
