Why should I hire a dog walker?

I’ve always told people that as dog walkers,

"we get paid by time, not distance."

Every dog owner knows that specific brand of internal screaming when you’re already running ten minutes late, and your hound slams the brakes on to inspect an unremarkable patch of dirt. They take three steps, pause, and do it again. You haven’t gone for a walk. You’ve been drafted into an elite-level, Olympic-standard sniffing tournament.

To you, it’s a dead clump of weeds. To your dog, it’s today’s front-page news, full-colour sports section, and the neighborhood gossip column all rolled into one.

Meanwhile, your life is waiting. You have a mountain of washing in the basket, work emails dinging, and a pasta bake burning in your head. You set out thinking, "Quick lap, do your business, back home in fifteen."

Instead, you’re trapped in the drizzle, slowly dying inside, telepathically begging: "Please, just choose a blade of grass and p**p on it."

Dogs can smell desperation. They will deliberately hold it in just to test your will to live.

That’s where having a dog walker changes everything. When I’m on the clock, I do not care if we only end up down the road in an hour.

We have no destination to get to.

My schedule is literally: let this creature have the best day possible.

We don't have to hit a personal best for mileage. If your dog wants to zig-zag like an uncalibrated roomba, backtrack three times to p**s on a random twig, or stare blankly into an empty hedge like a Victorian ghost, we will do it.

I am professionally paid to look ridiculous standing on a pavement for twelve uninterrupted minutes.

It also gives you permission to stop feeling guilty. Life happens. Your shift runs long, your energy hits zero, or the British rain turns sideways and your dog gives you a look that says, “You first, mate.”

Booking a walker doesn’t make you a bad pet parent. It means you recognise that modern human existence is an endless circus.

It’s an absolute lifesaver if your dog is reactive, too. Constantly scanning every corner for off-lead spaniels, scooters, and suspicious crisp packets is a mental workout. You need a break from being an undercover bodyguard. Handing over the lead lets you breathe for an afternoon, knowing someone else is happily handling the bodyguard duties.

And while we’re here, put the bloody phone away when you are out with them. Yes this is coming from a young person whose generation was raised on tech.

TikTok can survive twenty minutes without you.

I see people glued to Instagram while their dog is trying to share the most thrilling adventure of their Tuesday.

Talk to them.
Throw the soggy tennis ball.
Laugh at their goofy ears bouncing.
Do anything.

Just leave that damn phone alone.

They only get so many walks in their lifetime. Hell, you never know when it might be your last walk with them.

They aren't going to live as long as we do, and that wet pavement is the undisputed highlight of their 24 hours.

Hiring a dog walker doesn't mean you're tapping out of your responsibilities; it just means adding an extra friend to your dog's crew and buying yourself a slice of peace.

And frankly, the next time your dog decides a rusty fence post requires a forensic five minute investigation, I will happily stand in the rain and take that hit for you. 😉

🐾 Back to walks! 🐾

Our first walk after my holiday and Cooper absolutely smashed it! 🥹💙 It was so lovely to see him again and get straight back into our walks together.

And somehow, we even managed to spot a deer in the local graveyard! 🦌 I genuinely have absolutely no idea how it got there because I have never seen a deer there before, they’re definitely not a regular sighting! 😂 Cooper was very interested in his unexpected new friend, though!

A brilliant first walk back and I’m so proud of this little pup. 🐶💙 Please get in touch if you are needing a walker or sitter!

🐾 Some doggy pictures from today! 🐾

Collin and Clara had such a lovely time today and luckily, we managed to avoid both the rain and the heat! 🫣😂

Clara had an absolute blast chasing her ball, while Collin took full advantage of the opportunity to shower me with kisses and demand some fuss! 🥰

🐾 Welcome to Pawstead Care! 🐾

Hi everyone! ❤️ I’m so excited to introduce you to Pawstead Care and share a little bit about what I offer!

✔️ Fully Insured
✔️ First Aid Training - completed in person
✔️ Level 3 Animal Care Qualification

🐾 What makes Pawstead Care different?

For me, pet care is about more than simply turning up, walking a dog and leaving. I want every pet to feel comfortable, safe and genuinely cared for while they’re with me. ❤️

My Level 3 Animal Care qualification has given me a strong understanding of animals and their individual needs. It covered a huge range of topics, including animal behaviour, dog training and behaviour modification, animal welfare and ethics, health and disease, animal anatomy and functional systems, animal nutrition and feeding requirements, animal husbandry, animal legislation, animal handling and restraint, breeding and genetics, veterinary nursing principles and so much more!

This means I’m not just experienced in caring for animals, I also have the knowledge behind that care. I understand that every animal is different, and I take the time to learn their individual routines, behaviours, boundaries and needs.

I’m also First Aid trained, giving owners that extra peace of mind that their pets are in capable hands. ❤️

🐾 My Services

Whether you need:

• Regular or occasional dog walks
• Drop-in visits while you’re at work or out for the day
• Pet sitting or overnight care

Reactive and more challenging dogs are always welcome here. We don’t discriminate! I have experience working with dogs who need a little extra patience, understanding and confidence-building, and I genuinely enjoy working with them. 🙈❤️

I also have experience caring for horses, cats and some exotic animals, including tortoises and snakes, so Pawstead Care isn’t just for dogs!

A little Pawstead Care update! 🐾💚

Woah, its been a while hasn't it! 🤯 I can’t believe it’s already August! Our last update was at the beginning of July, and it’s been another incredibly busy few weeks filled with wagging tails, cuddles, and lots of happy memories.

First of all… if you’ve noticed there haven’t been many photos recently, I promise there’s a reason! 😂 My phone storage has officially given up on me, so I’ve had to be really selective with the photos I’ve taken. I’ll be sorting that out soon because I know everyone loves seeing their pups on their adventures!

July was also a special month for me as I celebrated my birthday on 20th July. Thank you so much to everyone who sent birthday messages, cards, even presents and wishes, it really made my day. 💚

As always, here’s a little update on some of our wonderful Pawstead family…

🐺 Axel & Meira have continued to keep me on my toes with their energy and big personalities. They never fail to put a smile on my face, and every walk with them is an adventure! Wilson, our favourite grumpy Shar-Pei, is still as wonderfully stubborn as ever, and I wouldn’t have him any other way. He has gotten better since, but I don't think his growling greeting will ever go away. Toby has made me so proud. Since changing from walks to drop-in visits, his confidence has grown so much. When we first met, everything was a little scary, but now he actually leads me out of the front door! We still have a journey to go with him but it is lovely watching him grow. Watching that confidence build has been one of my favourite parts of the year. Cooper definitely isn’t the tiny puppy we first met anymore! He’s growing into such a handsome boy, although he’s still got plenty of puppy energy and keeps me laughing every visit and walk. Zak, our number one regular, has been his usual amazing self. It’s always a pleasure spending time with him, and I don’t think he’d forgive me if I didn’t give him a special mention! Clara & Collin have continued being absolute joys to spend time with. Whether we’re out on a walk or having a swim in the pond, they always brighten my day. We’ve also sadly said goodbye to Bella and Millie.

August is also quite a big month for me! I am going away towards the middle of the month, as a little treat that I will say is for my birthday (None other than camping at a festival for a few days 😉). I also have my driving test. Hopefully I will pass! (Although lets keep our hopes low as I don't believe in miracles 😆)

Finally, I have some really exciting news… 🎉

Pawstead Care is potentially growing!

I’m currently looking into bringing somebody onto the team. Nothing is confirmed just yet, but if everything goes to plan, this means more availability for new clients, more flexibility, and hopefully far fewer cancelled walks whenever I’m away or even feeling unwell. (Although for the past 8 months I haven't actually had a sick day!!!) It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and I’m so excited to see where this next chapter takes Pawstead Care. I will still of course oversee everything and make sure walks are done to a high standard. Like I said, nothing is confirmed and will only be so if the person passes a trial period.

Thank you so much to every single person who continues to support my little business. Whether you’ve booked with me, recommended me to a friend, liked a post, or simply followed along, it genuinely means the world. Watching Pawstead Care continue to grow has been so rewarding, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings. 🐾💚

If you’re looking for reliable, caring pet care in Wakefield, I’d love to hear from you!

Back with these two handsome boys for another pet sit! 🐾💙

It was so lovely to see Oscar and Harvey again. They made me feel right at home from the moment I walked through the door.

Harvey, as always, kept us busy with endless games of fetch (I think he’d happily play all day if he could! 🎾), while Oscar made sure I got plenty of his famous wet, sloppy kisses and cuddles. 🥹❤️ (And of course his howls and barks! 😁)

There was definitely enough fur around the house to knit another dog… but we wouldn’t have it any other way! 😂

They’ve both been absolute stars all week, enjoying their walks, playtime, treats, naps, and lots of love and attention. It’s always such a privilege to look after pets who become familiar faces, and seeing their excitement when I arrive never gets old.

🐾 A Day with Oti! 🐾

Over the weekend we had an afternoon of pet sitting with one of our lovely ad hoc walking clients, Oti… and what a brilliant day we had! ❤️

The sit started with a lovely stroll. Our walk included plenty of sniffing, exploring, and, naturally, rolling around in the grass like only a happy dog can! 😁

Then when we came back we partook in of Oti’s favourite hobbies: being the neighbourhood watch! We spent plenty of time supervising the street from the window, making sure everyone passing by knew we were on duty (with a few enthusiastic barks, of course!).

Once our important security work was done, it was time for some garden fun. We chased balls, tried to catch bubbles floating through the air and enjoyed lots of zoomies. It was only fair that by the end of it all we had lots of cuddles on the sofa while watching Netflix together. 🛋️❤️
It was absolutely lovely to have him.

Looking after your pets isn’t just about feeding and walking them, it’s about making sure they have a fun, enriching day filled with love, play, and companionship while you’re away.

🐾 Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of seeing Lilli for an ad hoc walk! Lilli and her big sister Brooke were actually the second clients to join Pawstead Care, and nearly 6 months later, we’re still lucky enough to spend time with Lilli. That happy face says it all!! ❤️

Sadly, Brooke was rehomed so we won’t be seeing her again, but she’ll always hold a special place in our hearts and we’ll never forget her. 🐶💕

It was a busy week for us, with 11 wonderful pups on our schedule, but we loved every minute of it. Seeing familiar faces and spending time with such amazing dogs is exactly why we do what we do. Thank you to all my clients for helping me get my steps in🐾✨
