🐾 Meet Jeff, the most adorable Dachshund puppy! 💙
At just 11 weeks old, this energetic and playful little pup began experiencing seizures. Understandably, his owners were very concerned, so Jeff was referred to our neurology team for further investigation.
A neurological examination performed by Arajeane identified moderate proprioceptive deficits — affecting his awareness and placement of his limbs — in his left forelimb and left hindlimb. He also had reduced facial sensation on his left side, findings suggestive of a right-sided forebrain deficit.
An MRI of Jeff’s brain was performed, which revealed cerebral changes and lesions suggestive of a congenital or degenerative condition.
Despite these findings, Jeff’s happy personality and zest for life remained unchanged! 🥰 He is now back home with his family, enjoying life and doing what puppies do best — playing! 🐶💕
Jeff will remain under the close supervision of his dedicated owners and will continue his treatment to help control his seizures.
We’re so pleased to see this brave little pup back home, surrounded by the people who love him. Keep being your wonderful, courageous self, Jeff! 💙🐾✨

✨ A fantastic evening of CPD at Wicstun Vets! ✨
This month, we had the pleasure of joining the team at Wicstun Vets for a brilliant evening of learning, discussion and catching up with colleagues.
James Rushton, Specialist in Ophthalmology, delivered an engaging overview of some of the ophthalmic challenges commonly encountered in practice — from approaching ocular foreign bodies through to cataract surgery. 👁️
It was wonderful to see such a great turnout, with vets joining us from Wicstun Vets, Norwood Vets, End Cottage Vets and The Gables Veterinary Centre.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the interesting discussions, and to the Wicstun vet team for such a warm welcome. We’re already looking forward to the next one! 🐾

🐾 Meet Ben, a very handsome German Shorthaired Pointer! 💙

Ben’s story is a great example of why recognising unusual changes in your dog can be so important.
Following treatment for lameness caused by an interdigital abscess, Ben developed generalised stiffness, mild exophthalmos (prominent eyes) and some striking changes to his face. These included a wrinkled forehead, fixed facial expression known as risus sardonicus, and swelling and firmness of the muscles used for chewing (masseter muscles), which caused a difficulty in eating.
Together, these signs were consistent with tetanus.
🧠 What is tetanus?
Tetanus is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition in dogs, caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The toxin affects the nervous system, causing muscles to become stiff and prone to spasms.
Dogs with tetanus can develop:
🐾 Generalised muscle stiffness
🐾 Difficulty walking
🐾 Difficulty eating or opening their mouth
🐾 Erect ears and a wrinkled forehead
🐾 Prominent eyes
🐾 A characteristic fixed facial expression called risus sardonicus, caused by tightening of the facial muscles
In Ben’s case, the interdigital abscess was identified as the source of infection, and the affected toe needed to be amputated. Thankfully, Ben responded well to treatment and continues to do brilliantly! 💙
Ben’s case is a valuable reminder that tetanus, although uncommon in dogs, can cause some very distinctive signs. Early recognition and appropriate treatment are key, and with prompt veterinary care, dogs can make an excellent recovery.
The first photo is Ben’s normal relaxed face (post treatment) and the second shows the characteristic facial changes of tetanus, with his facial muscles pulled back into a fixed expression (before treatment).
We’re so pleased to see Ben doing so well! 🐶💙

🎉 That's a wrap on the 2026 Linnaeus Cardiology Symposium! ❤️

We’re incredibly proud of our very own Chris Linney and Alex Brown, alongside a fantastic group of cardiology specialists, residents and professionals from across the UK, who shared their expertise and insights at this year’s event, helping to improve the health of pets' hearts across the nation.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for a day filled with learning, discussion and collaboration. With over 120 delegates attending from across the UK and beyond, the symposium once again highlighted the power of coming together to share ideas, challenge thinking and learn from one another – all with the shared goal of improving patient care.

Thank you to all the speakers, delegates, organisers and supporters who made the day such a success. We’re already looking forward to the next symposium!

🌟 The Priory 10K Run at Nostell Priory 🌟

A huge well done to our amazing team members who took part in the Priory 10K fun run at Nostell Priory last week. It was a beautiful evening, and we're incredibly proud to see members of our veterinary and nursing teams getting involved, supporting one another, and taking on the challenge.

🌟 A Huge Congratulations to Holly! 🌟

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the fantastic achievement of our newly qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse, Holly Hughes, who has been awarded the VetSkill OSCE Star Award.

Holly achieved a distinction within the top 5% of her veterinary nursing course and successfully passed all 12 Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) stations – an exceptional accomplishment that demonstrates her dedication, skill and commitment to the profession.

The OSCE Star Award recognises outstanding performance in the practical assessments required to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse, making this a truly remarkable achievement.

Please join us in congratulating Holly on this well-deserved recognition. We are delighted to have her as part of the team and look forward to seeing all she accomplishes in her veterinary nursing career.

🌟 Congratulations to Kirsty! 🌟
We're incredibly proud of Kirsty White, one of our dedicated Registered Veterinary Nurses, who has been Highly Commended in the RCVS Knowledge Quality Improvement Awards for her outstanding work on patient nutrition.
Kirsty's project focused on ensuring hospitalised patients receive their appropriate Resting Energy Requirements (RER) – the number of calories needed to support essential bodily functions. Through her work, compliance nearly doubled, helping to enhance patient care and wellbeing across the hospital.
Kirsty said:

"I feel incredibly lucky to have received Highly Commended for my audit work for a second year in a row. I hope that continuing to raise awareness within the team will further support a holistic approach to patient care."

This fantastic achievement reflects Kirsty's commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in patient care.

First, meet Anna, our new Anaesthesia Clinician 🙌
Anna graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2012 and spent around nine years in general practice before progressing her anaesthesia training. She completed an internship in 2021 and has recently finished her residency – a fantastic achievement 👏
Anna has a keen interest in sustainability within anaesthesia and locoregional (targeted) pain relief, and is particularly excited to get involved with the complex cardiac cases we see at Paragon. Outside of work, she enjoys keeping active with cycling and climbing 🚴‍♀️

We’re also delighted to introduce Vicky, who joins our Orthopaedic team as a Surgical Clinician 🦴
Vicky graduated from the University of Bristol in 2013 and began her career in mixed practice, where exposure to a varied and complex caseload sparked her passion for advanced surgery. After spending time working and travelling in Thailand and New Zealand, she returned to the UK to pursue this further.
She has recently completed a Small Animal Surgery residency at referral level and received the ECVS Small Animal Orthopaedic Resident Forum Award for her research into orthopaedic conditions in French Bulldogs 🐾
Vicky is excited to join our specialist-led team and looks forward to delivering the highest standard of care for patients with complex orthopaedic needs.
