Dog Walking Safety Tips for Summer 🐾

With the warm weather here, we aren’t the only ones out enjoying the local trails! The UK’s only venomous snake, the Adder, is currently active and basking in the sun.

While they are shy creatures that prefer to avoid us, our curious dogs can easily startle them while sniffing in the undergrowth.

We’ve put together this quick guide to help you keep your dog safe on your walks:

📍 Where to be careful: Heathlands, sand dunes, woodland edges, and moorlands.

🦮 What to do: Stick to clear footpaths and use a lead in high-risk or heathland areas.

🌿 Respect wildlife: Remember, adders are protected by law. Never attempt to disturb, handle, or harm them.

⚠️ If your dog is bitten: Do not panic. Keep your dog as calm and still as possible (carry them if you can to slow the spread of venom) and call us at Vermont Veterinary Surgery immediately.

Know the signs of heatstroke ⚠️

Early signs of heatstroke in pets
These are similar in dogs and cats (although in cats the signs are often more subtle) and can include;

Panting, this can progress to distressed or noisy breathing as the heatstroke worsens
Restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade or water
Drooling
Red gums or tongue
Increased heart rate
Vomiting or diarrhoea

Advanced stages of heatstroke in pets
This can include:

Lethargy
Confusion
Seizures
Weakness or collapse *

If you think your pet may be overheating, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

High temperatures can quickly become dangerous for your pet.

Here is what you need to know to keep them safe:

🐾 The 5-Second Tarmac Test: Pavements get too hot. Place the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them. Sticking to early morning or late evening walks is best.

🐶 Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Persian cats struggle significantly more in the heat. Keep them indoors in a cool, well-ventilated room.

🚗 Never Leave Pets in Cars: Not even for a quick errand, and not with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside a car can skyrocket to dangerous levels for your pet.

💧 Hydration & Shade: Keep fresh, cool water topped up at all times.

🚨 Signs of Heatstroke to Watch For:

Heavy panting or drooling

Lethargy, weakness, or stumbling

Bright red or dark gums

Vomiting

What to do: If you suspect heatstroke, contact the vet right away.

Sometimes healing comes from medicine.
Sometimes it comes from knowing you’re not alone.

Rodney came in for a drip, but it quickly became clear that what he needed most wasn’t just treatment—it was company. He wouldn’t settle unless someone sat right beside him, so our dear Colleen pulled up a chair and became his emotional support human. ❤️

Moments like these remind us that veterinary care is about more than medicine. It’s about understanding what our patients need, even when they can’t tell us with words.

With beautiful sunshine and temperatures climbing up to 30°C, it is important to remember that our pets can't handle the heat the same way we do. High temperatures can quickly become dangerous.

Here is what you need to know to keep them safe this weekend:
