I’m seeing a lot of puppy posts and videos at the moment where harnesses are being recommended almost automatically, often with very little discussion about why that particular piece of equipment is being chosen, how it affects the dog, or whether the advice is actually based on current evidence.

Whether we’re talking about harnesses, collars, leads or any other piece of equipment, we should be asking questions, looking at the research, considering the functional impact on the dog and making informed choices, rather than simply following whatever happens to be popular on social media at the time.

I’ve been presenting on the use of harnesses since 2014 and published my first blog on their impact in 2020. I revisited the research last year and also recorded a video looking at the evidence in more detail.

The point has never been that one piece of equipment is automatically good and another automatically bad. It is that equipment affects our dogs, physically as well as behaviourally, and we need to understand what we are using, why we are using it and what the evidence actually tells us.

So if you are being told that you “should” use a particular type of harness, or that one style is inherently kinder, safer or better, don’t just take that at face value.

Go and look. Read the research. Check who is making the claim, what they are basing it on, and whether the advice still stands when you look beyond the current trend.

Good dog ownership and good dog training should be based on informed choices rather than fashionable ones.

If you want to look at the research for yourself, I’ve brought it together here, along with the video:

This is so true! 🥰🐾

This is so true! 🥰🐾

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is the idea that a dog can be “fixed” in one lesson. As trainers, we hear it all the time. “My dog was fixed in an hour.” “The trainer sorted everything in one session.” “We only needed one lesson!”

While it’s wonderful when handlers leave a session feeling hopeful, that’s not the same as a dog being trained. Here’s the truth…

Dogs learn through repetition. They learn because the behaviours we want are reinforced over and over again. They learn because their handlers become consistent, because the environment is managed well, because the same information is applied every single day, not because a trainer waved a magic wand for an hour.

Sometimes a trainer will explain something in a different way and suddenly it clicks for the handler or the handler reaches a point where they’re finally ready to commit to practising. Sometimes they simply become more consistent. That’s often when real progress begins and that’s fantastic because ultimately, it doesn’t matter whose voice helped the handler understand. What matters is that the dog benefits.

But let’s also give credit where it’s due. Progress doesn’t happen because someone said a few clever words. Progress happens because the handler gets up every morning and practises. The trainer provides the roadmap but the handler walks the journey. As trainers, we’d all love to be able to transform every dog in one lesson. The reality is that ethical training doesn’t work like that.

Behaviour change isn’t instant. Confidence isn’t instant. Reliable recall isn’t instant. Loose lead walking isn’t instant. Reactivity isn’t resolved overnight. Lasting change takes patience, consistency and trust in the process.

If you’re looking for a dog trainer, don’t ask, “Can you fix my dog in one lesson?” Ask instead: “Can you teach me how to help my dog succeed for the rest of their life?”

Because that’s where the real magic is. The best dog training isn’t about creating dogs that behave perfectly for the trainer. It’s about creating handlers who understand their dogs well enough that they no longer need the trainer.

Huge congratulations to Meg and Laura for completing a beginner course with me ☺️

When Meg first came she was so nervous (which made her very reactive) she spent the entire lesson sitting under the trees as far as away from the other dogs as possible, by the end she’s walking off lead weaving in and out of the others; recalling past them and happy to lie in the floor in the group whilst we stood about chatting!

The change in her has been overwhelming and I couldn’t be prouder!

Well done Meg and Laura of course! 👏🏻🥰🐾

From Gundog demonstrators to winning Best in Show all in the space of 4 hours 😁👏🏻🥰🐾

Absolutely thrilled with the girls today, it was Merryn’s first demonstration and she really did me proud. The tannoy, the spectators, the other dogs didn’t phase her at all. Misty took it all in her stride as always!

Thank you to everyone who stopped to say how amazing they were, I really appreciate every compliment and kind word.

This kind of steadiness, obedience and adaptability doesn’t happen by magic, it takes a lot of hard work, training and exposure. If you’d like to take your dog to a country show but don’t because you think they’d be too much of a handful, or you do but can’t enjoy it because of their bad manners then get in touch and find out how I can help you.

'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' is as true in dog training as it is anywhere else... so teach the habits you want before the unwanted ones become rehearsed.

So much of what people call behaviour problems could have been avoided with early guidance, clear boundaries, good habits, and a little bit of training before things became difficult.

Because prevention isn’t about being strict, it's about being fair...

It’s teaching the puppy how to settle before they become the adolescent who can’t switch off.

It’s teaching a solid recall before they discover the joy of self-employment.

It’s teaching calm, 'four on the floor' greetings before jumping up becomes a habit.

It’s teaching good lead manners before walks become a battle.

And yes, it also means teaching a solid “no” so your dog understands clearly when something is not available, not appropriate, or not safe.

Because positive training does not mean permissive training... our dogs need kindness, but they also need clarity.

Remember, early training doesn’t take the fun out of life with your dog; it gives both of you more freedom, more confidence, and far fewer problems to fix later.

Absolutely brilliant training day yesterday over at Antonia and Mike were fabulous hosts and laid on one of the best days I’ve been too in a long time.

It’s always good to get out with your own dogs and train on different ground, but sometimes finding the time and energy is tough so when this came up it was too good an opportunity to miss.

Myself, along with clients and friends formed a team of 8, we laughed and encouraged each other in equal measure. The “exercises” included the bolting rabbit, a simulated walk up, water and lots of very mixed terrain, plus a fabulous “elevenses”

Great fun was had by all, the dogs did exceptionally well considering most are novice or very young. I couldn’t be prouder of my handlers who all demonstrated how much they have learnt over the last few months, well done everyone!!
