Meet Jess & Tilly 🐾❤️

Jess is the newest addition to her family, and she has a very special connection with Tilly.

They’re genetic sisters, despite being five years and several litters apart, and now they get to grow up together. 🥹🐶

I’m so excited to be following Jess’s journey and helping her family give her the best start possible.

Because puppies don’t stay puppies forever. The things we teach and the experiences we give them now help shape the dogs they become. ❤️

Healthy play doesn’t have to be nonstop.

Dogs will often pause, move apart or briefly shake off before deciding whether to continue. These breaks give both dogs an opportunity to check in and make another choice.

Watch for balanced movement, role changes and both dogs choosing to return. If one dog repeatedly tries to leave while the other continues chasing, it may be time to calmly interrupt.

Does your dog prefer gentle play or full-speed chaos?

Does your dog stop to sniff absolutely everything on a walk? 🐾

It can be tempting to hurry them along, but sniffing is an important part of how dogs explore and understand their surroundings. A slower walk with plenty of opportunities to sniff can be just as valuable as covering a longer distance.

Next time you’re out, try letting your dog choose where to stop and giving them a little longer to investigate.

Does your dog have a favourite sniffing spot?

A wagging tail doesn’t automatically mean a dog is happy and one piece of body language rarely tells the entire story.

Look at the whole dog: their eyes, ears, mouth, posture, movement and tail. Then consider what is happening around them.

Body language should be read in context. Learning to notice subtle changes can help us recognise when a dog is comfortable, uncertain or asking for more space.

Which part of your dog’s body language do you notice first?

Training should fit the dog not force every dog into the same method.

Age, health, breed, personality, past experiences and environment can all influence how a dog responds. Something that works brilliantly for one dog might be confusing or overwhelming for another.

Good training means paying attention, adapting the plan and working with the dog in front of you.

Confidence develops at your dog’s pace not ours.

When a dog is unsure of a new place, person or experience, forcing them closer can make the situation feel even more difficult. Give them time to observe, investigate and move away if they need to.

Small, positive experiences are more useful than pushing for a quick result. Progress might look slow, but choosing to take one step closer is still progress.

What has your dog gradually become more confident around?

A longer walk isn’t always the answer.

Dogs also need opportunities to sniff, play, rest, make choices and spend relaxed time with the people they trust. These things support their wellbeing in ways that physical exercise alone cannot.

Instead of only asking, “Has my dog had enough exercise today?” try asking, “Have their other needs been met too?”

What activity does your dog enjoy most besides walking?

14/08/2026

When a dog becomes excitable, restless or unable to listen, our first thought is often that they need more exercise.

Sometimes, they actually need more rest.

An overtired dog may struggle to settle even when they desperately need sleep. Creating a comfortable resting space and introducing calm periods throughout the day can help them switch off.

Rest isn’t time taken away from training it supports learning, behaviour and wellbeing.

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but those first few weeks can also feel overwhelming!

Before worrying about perfect behaviour, focus on helping your puppy feel safe. A predictable routine, plenty of sleep, gentle introductions and realistic expectations will give them a strong foundation.

Your puppy has just left everything familiar behind. They need time to learn about their new home, their new family and the world around them.

What was the biggest surprise when you first brought your puppy home?

Calmness isn’t simply something a dog either has or doesn’t have it’s a skill that can be developed.

Practising in quieter environments helps dogs learn to observe what’s happening without immediately needing to react or join in. Start somewhere your dog feels comfortable, keep sessions short and reward the moments when they naturally settle.

We shouldn’t expect dogs to remain calm in difficult situations if they haven’t had opportunities to practise in easier ones first.

Where does your dog find it easiest to relax?
