🐾 Do you know what’s actually in your dog’s food?

The front of the bag might tell you it’s premium, natural, wholesome or high in protein… but the real story is on the back.

And honestly? Reading pet food labels can be bloody confusing (even for me sometimes).

That’s why we’ve put this little guide together.

Fresh foods are generally much less processed than their dry alternatives, and the same can be said when comparing fresh food with some highly processed wet foods too.

But it’s not as simple as looking at the biggest number on the packet.

Moisture changes the numbers.
Ingredients can be split into different forms so they appear lower down the list.
And two foods that look similar on the label can be very different nutritionally.

And this is where we can help. ❤️

If you’re standing in the pet food aisle wondering which food is actually the better choice for your dog, come and see us.

Bring the food you’re currently feeding, have a chat with the team and let us help you understand what you're actually looking at and if it's suitable for your dog's needs.

No judgement. No food shaming. Just honest advice and a little help making sense of the shelves. 🐶

Pop into The Dog’s Deli and let us help you choose. ❤️

*The dog food pictured below is just an example of a popular food choice, we do not stock it.

🐾 5 things I wish every dog owner knew about feeding their dog…

There is SO much information out there about what we should be feeding our dogs, and honestly, it can be really bloody confusing.

So here are 5 things I wish more dog owners knew:

1️⃣ Expensive doesn't automatically mean better.

Price can be influenced by lots of things. Ingredients, manufacturing, packaging, marketing and even the size of the company. A higher price doesn't automatically mean a food is nutritionally better for your dog.

2️⃣ A long ingredient list doesn't mean a food is healthy.

Ingredients lists can look terrifying if you don't know what you're looking at! Lots of individual ingredients doesn't necessarily mean a good quality food, and a short list doesn't automatically make something better. It's about understanding what those ingredients are and why they're there.

3️⃣ “Natural” doesn't tell you everything you need to know.

Natural sounds lovely, doesn't it? But it's not a guarantee of nutritional quality. It's much more useful to look at the actual ingredients, nutritional information and whether the food is appropriate for your individual dog.

4️⃣ Your dog's poo can tell you a LOT. 💩
No
It's not the most glamorous part of owning a dog, but their stools can give us useful clues about how they're tolerating their diet. Changes in consistency, frequency, colour or smell can all be worth paying attention to, especially when they're persistent.

5️⃣ There isn't one “best” way to feed every dog. Just the best way to feed YOUR dog.

Raw, cooked, wet, dry, fresh… there are lots of different ways to feed a dog well. What works brilliantly for one dog might not work for another. Age, health, lifestyle, preferences and individual tolerance all matter.

And THAT is why I'm such a big believer in understanding what you're feeding rather than blindly following what someone tells you is “the best”. ❤️

Your dog is an individual. Their diet should be too.

☀️ Wow, it's a warm one today ☀️

It's already unbearable in the shop but we are hanging on until we've got dougies in. I envision that we will be closing between 2 and 3pm.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and thanks for your understanding 🐾❤️

Please please please leave your dogs at home today, I've seen far too many out walking in this. I promise your dog doesn't even want to walk today . (Obviously if they need to toilet out on a walk then stick to shaded and grassy areas).

🐾 More RAWGUST Myths 🐾

❌ MYTH: Dogs NEED carbohydrates in their diet.

“But dogs produce amylase, so they must need carbs!”

Nope. Being able to digest something doesn't mean an animal has an essential requirement for it.

Dogs are carnivorous by design. Their metabolism is well equipped to utilise protein and fat as primary fuel sources, and they can produce the glucose they need through gluconeogenesis, using amino acids and other non-carbohydrate sources.

Dietary carbohydrate isn't considered an essential nutrient for healthy adult dogs because their bodies can make glucose themselves.

And this is where I think we need to separate “can eat it” from “needs it.”

A varied diet based around meat, bone and offal, with the right balance and variety of ingredients, can provide the nutrients a dog physiologically requires without needing carbohydrates to make up a significant part of the diet.

Adding some fresh vegetables? Absolutely. They can provide fibre, phytonutrients and other useful compounds. But that doesn't mean we need to turn a carnivorous animal's diet into one dominated by carbohydrate.

And then there's another really important part of nutrition:

Feed the dog in front of you.

What works brilliantly for one dog won't necessarily work for another. Age, activity, digestion, health, individual tolerance and even preference all matter.

So understand the biology. Feed appropriately for the species. Provide variety.

And then look at the individual dog sitting in front of you.

Because nutrition isn't one-size-fits-all. 🐾

Can digest ≠ needs.
Can tolerate ≠ thrives on.
